Description
Since the late 19th century, the Gramona family has been synonymous with precision, patience and a deep connection with time. At the foot of the Montserrat massif, in the heart of the Penedès, they have perfected the art of viticulture as a form of intimate conversation with the land. But it was in the early 1990s that a bold twist changed the history of the house: inspired by German Eiswein, they decided to challenge the Mediterranean climate and attempt something unthinkable at the time - to create a sweet ice wine in a frost-free land.
Thus Vi de Glass was born, a project as poetic as it is technical, which forced them to reinvent processes and to dialogue with nature from a different logic. The result is a wine that captures the essence of the grape in its purest and most concentrated state. In this edition, the protagonist is the Riesling, a noble variety of Germanic origin, renowned for its aromatic expressiveness and its ability to combine sweetness and nerve. Grown in cool plots of chalky soils in the Alt Penedès, where the altitude mitigates the sun's heat, this grape acquires a vibrant and refined profile, far from any excess.
Winemaking
The key to this wine lies in the cold. But not the one offered by the climate, but the one that Gramona has managed to recreate in the cellar. After a manual harvest in small boxes, the grapes are frozen at -15 °C in special chambers, a process that naturally concentrates sugars, acidity and aromas. As the grapes are frozen, only the densest and purest nectar is extracted when pressed, leaving behind the water in the form of ice.
This thick, bright must ferments slowly for weeks - sometimes months - in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, allowing all the aromatic nuances to develop without losing any of their freshness. Gramona Vi de Glass Riesling is not aged in oak: it is bottled young to preserve its fruity and crystalline character, as if the cluster were still hanging from the vine.
Taste
Gramona Vi de Glass Riesling is a symphony of purity and pleasure. When served, the wine falls into the glass like liquid amber, with golden reflections that already anticipate its sensual density. On the nose, a burst of ripe white fruit: conference pear, golden apple, lychee, and a touch of candied citrus intertwine with floral notes of jasmine and a subtle hint of noble hydrocarbon, so typical of well-crafted Riesling.
On the palate, the balance is simply masterful: an enveloping, silky sweetness that caresses the palate without being cloying, supported by a vibrant, cutting acidity, like a thread of steel that structures the whole. Notes of peach in syrup, roasted pineapple, and a final salinity that recalls the chalky origin of the soil. Long, precise, with a finish that lingers like an echo of fruit and freshness.
Ideal as a companion to foie gras, blue cheeses or desserts with white fruits. But also perfect on its own, as a liquid caprice, a small luxury made with science, soul and patience.
