Description

Since 1825, the Faiveley family has been cultivating Burgundy with an almost reverential respect. In Mercurey, in the Côte Chalonnaise, their history is intertwined with the chalky-clay soils that have made the appellation famous. The old Pinot Noir vines that give life to Faiveley Mercurey Vieilles Vignes, planted between 1962 and 1981 on compact, stony soils, are located on a plot of land next to La Framboisière. They are difficult to work but extraordinarily expressive. This "Clos Rochette", the winery's monopoly since 1933, offers a deep, mineral character, the fruit of its south-eastern exposure and organic cultivation.

Where others opt for ease, Faiveley persists in respectful practices, believing that wine is born in the vineyard and not corrected in the cellar. This fidelity to the origin is perceived in every bottle: a wine that does not seek to impress with volume, but to convince with precision.

Winemaking

The vinification of Faiveley Mercurey Vieilles Vignes combines whole bunches and destemmed grapes, in varying proportions depending on the vintage. Fermentation is carried out with daily pumping over for 15 to 19 days, aiming to gently extract colour, tannins and varietal character. The drained wine is separated by gravity and pressed slowly to preserve the purity of the must. Ageing is extended for 12 months in French oak barrels, of which only 10% is new, ensuring a balance between wood and fruit.

Taste

A Pinot Noir with a restrained and elegant profile, Faiveley Mercurey Vieilles Vignes expresses itself with depth and precision. On the nose, notes of ripe cherry, fresh raspberry and an echo of violets intertwine with subtle hints of undergrowth, fine leather and sweet spices. The palate is precise, with polished tannins and vibrant acidity. The red fruit comes through clearly, accompanied by mineral notes that recall the limestone rock of its origin. The finish is long, earthy, slightly smoky, with an austere elegance that conquers without any need for showiness. A wine with a Burgundian soul and the distinctive nerve of the Côte Chalonnaise, ideal for those in search of authenticity, purity and character.
