Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2024

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
As always, a blend of 70% Roussanne and 30% Bourboulenc, the 2024 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc opens with aromas of white fruits, ripe orchard fruit, spices and clove. Medium- to full-bodied, concentrated, ample and satiny in texture, it has a rich core of fruit and concludes in a long, dense finish that ultimately lacks a bit of energy and lift. It remains a very good wine.

Description
Domaine de Marcoux was not born out of a passing trend, but out of a sense of place. The Armenier family has been documented in Châteauneuf du Pape since 1344, and the decisive turning point came when Sophie and Catherine Armenier took the reins of the estate, establishing a rigorous vision deeply rooted in the land. Even before it became fashionable, the winery committed to organic farming and a biodynamic approach to viticulture, tending the vineyard with plant-based preparations and infusions, always with the aim of listening to the landscape rather than imposing a formula on it. That spirit defines Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, because only a small proportion of Châteauneuf du Pape is white. The wine is based primarily on Roussanne and Bourboulenc, with hints of Clairette and Garnacha Blanca. It is grown on clay, colluvial deposits and Cretaceous limestone, bathed in Mediterranean sunlight and with the Mistral sweeping through the vineyard. This is the source of its dual character: sunny breadth and mineral tension.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc aims to preserve the true character of the fruit without any artificial embellishment. The grapes are harvested by hand into crates to preserve the integrity of the bunches. The whole grapes are then pressed; the must is clarified by settling and ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at around 17 ºC. After fermentation, the wine is separated from the coarse lees and continues to age on fine lees in a combination of stainless steel and demi-muids. This is a deliberate choice: the steel preserves purity and energy, whilst the large oak barrels add volume without overpowering the wine. No malolactic fermentation takes place, thus preserving the wine’s vigour and a more linear profile. Bottling takes place around seven months later.
Taste
In the glass, Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc makes a serene, noble first impression. There are notes of yellow pear, tender quince, citrus zest, white flowers, fennel and a hint of pale honey. The palate is full-bodied but not heavy; silky, yet underpinned by a salty, chalky vein that brings the whole wine together. It does not seek exuberance, but rather a balance between depth, freshness and texture. The finish offers ripe grapefruit, soft almond, dried herbs and a very clean salty note. A food-friendly wine with a subtle and distinguished profile, ideal for those seeking a great Rhône white with a mineral character and elegance.
