Description
Domaine Bart Marsannay Au Champ Salomon hails from one of the most serious and promising areas in the north of the Côte de Nuits. At Domaine Bart, a family-run winery spanning several generations and based in Marsannay, the aim has never been to mask the terroir, but rather to let the vineyard speak with a clear voice. Their approach is almost obstinate: rigorous work in the vineyard, respect for nature, hand-harvesting and fermentation with indigenous yeasts. This fidelity to the terroir fits perfectly with Au Champ Salomon, a vineyard considered among the finest in the appellation. Here, on clay and limestone soils and under the cool climate of northern Burgundy, Pinot Noir finds a more taut, straightforward and mineral expression.
Winemaking
At Domaine Bart Marsannay Au Champ Salomon, the winery’s philosophy remains to keep the winemaker’s hand in check so as not to disrupt the terroir’s natural rhythm. The grapes are carefully selected, cooled to preserve their natural vigour without hindering the spontaneous onset of fermentation, and vinified using gentle extraction techniques such as soft punching down and delicate pumping over. The wine is aged for around 12 months in 225- and 600-litre barrels, with a moderate proportion of new oak, before undergoing further refinement in tanks for around three months. The result does not seek overt oak or artificial opulence, but rather precision, texture and a clear expression of the vineyard.
Flavour
In the glass, Domaine Bart Marsannay Au Champ Salomon balances dark fruit with noble austerity. Black cherry, blackberry and plum emerge, but are soon joined by more serious notes of liquorice, violets, undergrowth and an earthy undertone that lends depth. On the palate, it has a medium body, firm yet polished tannins, a generous texture and a tension that runs through the wine from start to finish. This is not a fragile or ethereal Pinot Noir, but one with backbone, salinity and a stony underpinning. The finish offers a balanced blend of fruit, earth and delicate spice, with restrained power and a restrained elegance that makes it particularly well-suited to food.
