In the past, I have found the NV Reliquia Oloroso almost painful. There's a new saca or bottling now, presented in November 2020 and now released every year in half bottles with hand-painted (modern) labels. This has an explosion of aromas of low tide, rusty nail, iodine and seaweed, with brutal concentration and acidity (volatile and all) and almost painful concentration with marked bitterness. They do not aim for finesse but for concentration, which is what the oxidative aging was. As Robert Parker would say, it's a wine for masochists. ;-) There are 80 half bottles released every year.

Description
Barbadillo Oloroso Reliquia is an exceptional wine of very limited production, which represents the history and tradition of the Barbadillo winery, founded in 1821. This wine has been passed down from generation to generation, ageing untouched for more than 150 years, making it a true oenological relic. The main grape used for its production is Palomino Fino, a typical variety of the Jerez region, which allows the production of wines with great ageing capacity. This wine is made using the criaderas and soleras system, but its ageing is oxidative, which means that the wine ages in contact with oxygen, giving it its characteristic aromatic and flavour profile. Barbadillo Oloroso Reliquia is bottled in extremely small quantities, being presented in half-bottle format.
Elaboration
Barbadillo Oloroso Reliquia is aged in American oak casks in the historic cellars of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Oxidative ageing, which lasts for more than a century, is the key process that gives it its complexity and depth. During this prolonged period, the wine develops unique characteristics, with a remarkable concentration and aromatic evolution not found in other wines. The Barbadillo winery has preserved these relics in its oldest soleras, protecting a legacy of more than six generations.
Taste
Barbadillo Oloroso Reliquia has a dark mahogany colour with amber and golden highlights. On the nose, it surprises with an intense aromatic range dominated by notes of noble woods, dried fruits such as walnuts and almonds, and a saline touch characteristic of its ageing in Sanlúcar. On the palate, it is a complex and full-bodied wine, with a marked acidity that balances its great concentration of flavours. There are notes of caramel, coffee and spices, as well as a long, lingering finish that leaves a sensation of profound elegance.
