Description
Badenhorst Ringmuur Cinsault is born in the heart of the Swartland, where the sun beats down and the Atlantic cools the nights with a dry breath. Adi Badenhorst decided that South African Cinsault could speak softly and still make its mark. This wine stems from an obsession with place: a tiny vineyard planted in 1969, on decomposed granite soils, surrounded on two sides by an old circular farm wall that protects it like an amphitheatre. The yield is almost symbolic: 950 kg of grapes. Instead of "making more", the courageous decision was to make less and better, to accept scarcity as identity. There is no blending or make-up here: it is 100% Cinsault red wine and it is Swartland at its most intimate, granitic and dry, a region with a tradition of old vines, dryness and wines that prioritise tension and texture.
Winemaking
At Badenhorst Ringmuur Cinsault, the grapes are harvested as if each bunch counts (because it does): meticulous selection in the vineyard, small crates and an overnight cool-down to preserve freshness. Then comes the technical gesture that defines the style: whole cluster and carbonic maceration in a small, sealed tank. It is a fermentation that seeks perfume and silk, not jam. After 20 days, the wine is transferred to a single 600-litre tank for ageing. It is bottled unfiltered and unclarified, directly on gross lees, after 11 months in barrels: a lively wine, without a net, with its energy intact.
Taste
In the glass, Badenhorst Ringmuur Cinsault appears light ruby, transparent, almost deceptive. At first it appears serious; with air, it opens up into aromas of red cherry and raspberry, crisp and precise fruit. Underneath appears the signature of granite: a stony, dry sensation, with herbs and fine earth. The palate is medium-bodied, juicy but tightened by fresh acidity; the tannins are fine, small-grained, more "rock dust" than punch. Black pepper, a balsamic touch of menthol and a hint of fennel. The finish is clean, long, with echoing red fruit and a subtle minerality that begs for another sip: elegant, gourmet wine, and a pure expression of Swartland wine.
