Abel Mendoza Viura 2024

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2024 Viura, often the most austere of the varietal whites, was produced with the handpicked bunches from the plants scattered in different vineyards that are often planted with a field blend of the different traditional varieties. The vines can average 40 years of age and are on clay and limestone soils. They generate a pool of all the yeasts in their vineyards and then select the most appropriate to make a pied de cuve to start the fermentation, which in this case was in French oak barrels. The wine matured with fine lees in new French barriques for five months, and still the wine does not show oak aromas or flavors and reveals cleanliness, purity and balance. It's not showy but more austere and quite solid, with a nicely built palate. It has 14% alcohol, which is not noticeable, balanced by the pH of 3.29 and 5.97 grams of acidity that make it come through as balanced and harmonious, keeping the freshness and with good concentration and clout. It finishes with a salty note. It should develop nicely in bottle. 3,300 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2025.

Description
Abel Mendoza Viura is a white wine from Rioja produced by the Abel Mendoza winery in the municipality of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in the Rioja Alta. It is a single varietal Viura made from grapes from 30 year old vines, which were planted in clay-limestone soils, undoubtedly an ideal soil to obtain delicious grapes!
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand and transferred to the winery in small boxes. The wine ferments in new French oak barrels of 225 liters and then the wine remains in contact with its fine lees with an aging of 4-5 months.
Taste
Abel Mendoza Viura is pure and transparent, with a delicious palate and lively acidity. Its scents range from pollen to apple, with subtle floral notes and a background of spicy oak. The palate is extremely savory, with a salty introduction that makes you salivate, combining great volume with a delicate texture.
Ithas exquisite aromas including basil and fennel, quince and even beeswax.
You won't resist trying it as soon as you smell it!
Shy but exquisite
Abel Mendoza is a shrewd, shy and somewhat austere wine that reveals the genuine essence of the variety. It is not an extremely fragrant wine, but it is very well built, substantial and has enough freshness to complement the natural oak aging. It is always a wine that is ready to enjoy as soon as it is opened, but it is also an oenological gem that can gain a lot of depth with time in the bottle.
And you, do you dare to try this fresh wine that leaves no one indifferent? No doubt you will be surprised, but you will love it.
