Buy Wine from Château Mouton Rothschild
Château Mouton Rothschild is located in Pauillac, in the heart of the Médoc. The winery was founded in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, who bought the Château Brane-Mouton estate at auction, renaming it to its current name.
Over the years, the winery has been run by several generations of the Rothschild family, each leaving their own mark on the history and development of the vineyard. In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took the reins of the estate and in 1924 insisted that all wine be bottled at the château, a practice that continues to this day.Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, daughter of Baron Philippe, took over responsibility for the winery after her father's death in 1988. Known for her dedication and passion, she led the winery to new heights until her passing in 2014. Today, her children, Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild continue her legacy, working together to maintain the winery's excellence.
Vineyards
Château Mouton Rothschild' s vineyards are located in an exceptional terroir that combines soil, climate and sun exposure ideal for high quality viticulture. The terroir of the winery is characterised by deep gravelly soil on a clay and limestone base, providing excellent drainage and favouring deep root development. This soil composition is ideal for the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties that dominate the Mouton vineyards.
The climate in Pauillac is maritime temperate, with mild winters and warm summers. The influence of the nearby Gironde River also plays a crucial role in moderating the climate, protecting the vineyards from frost and providing even ripening of the grapes.
Philosophy
Winemaking at Château Mouton Rothschild is a blend of tradition and modernity. The winery follows a philosophy of respect for the terroir and the environment, using winemaking techniques that bring out the unique characteristics of each vintage. From manual harvesting to ageing in French oak barrels, each stage of the winemaking process is carried out with meticulous attention to detail.
The winery boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including a spectacular barrel room and a modern vat room designed by Richard Peduzzi and architect Bernard Mazières in collaboration with Philippe Dhalluin, the general manager of the family business. This combination of advanced technology and traditional methods enables Mouton Rothschild to produce wines that are recognised worldwide for their quality and distinctive character.
In winemaking, grape selection is rigorous, ensuring that only the best berries enter the fermentation process. Fermentation takes place in oak and stainless steel vats, and the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18-22 months. Each vintage is bottled at the château, preserving the integrity and authenticity of the wine.
The leitmotif of the Château Mouton Rothschild project is the quest for perfection and the expression of the Pauillac terroir. This commitment is reflected in every bottle of wine, which represents not only the Rothschild family heritage, but also the rich history and winemaking tradition of the Bordeaux region.
