Buy Wine from Château Lafleur
Château Lafleur was created in 1872 when Henri Greloud, founder and owner of Château Le Gay, purchased the land neighbouring Château Petrus, which in the future will give name to Lafleur property. It will take twenty years to place Château Lafleur as the third best wine from Pomerol behind Petrus and Vieux Château Certan. In 1915 André Robin purchased the domaine and at the same time acquired also Château Le Gay. Shortly after, he married Gabrielle Greloud, Henri Greloud's granddaughter. The couple will have two children, Thérèse and Marie Robin who in 1946 will take charge of the property for the following forty years. In 1984, after Thérèse Robin demise, Henri Greloud's great-great-grandchildren Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeau, start managing the family company up to the present day. In 2002, Batipste Guinaudeau, Jacques' son, and his wife, Julie, joined Château Lafleur.
Château Lafleur is a quite peculiar property: humble and unpretentious, where silence and good wine making prevails. It is placed at the east of Pomerol, and apart from Petrus thanks to a narrow local road. Its nearest neighbours are La Fleur Petrus, Le Gay and Hosanna. We are in the heart of Pomerol where the best wines beyond doubt are created. The estate has 4 hectares equally divided of Merlot and Cabernet Franc and therefore its wines are produced with equal proportion of these varieties. What about the soils? It is possible to distinguish up to four types; however the main compounds are stones and clay.
At vines, Guinaudeau commit to as little interventionist as possible wine making procedures; they watch carefully the vegetative cycle so they can provide selective aid to the vine if necessary. However, Lafleur vineyards are just like a beautiful garden, not a vine missing in any row. All winter and summer pruning are carried out carefully and each plant is individually looked after. At harvest time the berries are selected in the vineyards and at the cellar all works and protocols are performed thoughtfully in order to maintain the balance these magnificent terroirs supply.
The overall production of Château Lafleur is minimum, only 20.000 bottles of two wines. The prices have experienced a remarkable increase after the excellent reviews that consider Lafleur as one of the best wineries worldwide. Château Lafleur is concentrated, fresh, elegant, exotic and with dense scents of dark chocolate, cherries and mineral graphite. At length: exceptional. Pensées de Lafleur on its side, is considered by many as the second wine, though the Guinaudeau family disagrees arguing it is only a plot division. After several visits to Lafleur, we have been able to verify Pensées is as good as Château Lafleur. Perhaps Pensées is less intense and its tannins are not as present in its structure. It is a silky, smooth, spicy, enveloping wine with blackberries and jam aroma.
