Celler de Capçanes is an example of a cooperative winery located in the D.O. Montsant and named after the village where it is installed; previously the winery had bottled its wines under the D.O. Tarragona subzone Falset but with the birth in 2001 of the D.O. in which it is now protected it joined the same in order to be a standard of the same. The origin of the cooperative system of Celler de Capçanes dates back to 1933, when the different farmers in the area joined together under the same umbrella in order to produce wine in volume in order to be competitive in price. It was not until the early 1990s that Angel Teixidó, its current winemaker, marked a change in the winery with the beginning of the production of the first barrel-aged wines. Later, in 1995, another important milestone for the winery was the production of the first Kosher wine of the winery, without pasteurization, Flor de Primavera is considered one of the greatest wines in its range worldwide. It is from this moment on that the winery decided to produce a varied portfolio of non-Kosher wines, although they will also include the aforementioned wine.
The investment power of the winery is endorsed by the 80 partners that make up the winery, who have endorsed the different investments that have received external financing; they are the basis for the approval of the decisions that emanate from a business structure.
The area where Celler de Capçanes is located enjoys a Mediterranean climate and it is in the Montsant D.O. precisely where there is more sunshine in Catalonia and usually also where the drought is more extreme. The soils that make up the area are varied and among them we find limestone soils that are characterized by forcing the plant to extend its roots deeply in search of water since this type of soil does not retain water well; slate that gives us an unmistakably mineral character to the wines; clay, good soil to eliminate the effects of water stress, gives the wines a more rustic character and finally the honeycomb soils rich in calcium and that give the wines an easy and understandable character.
Among its wines, the Mas Donís blanc stands out for its freshness and liveliness; for those who like a wine with a light oak ageing and a faithful reflection of the most common varietals of the area, Mas Collet is the perfect choice; Costers del Gravet and Vall del Calàs make up Celler de Capçanes' plot wines; in the singularity segment, Cabrida is made with Garnacha from very old vines; Más Picosa is the winery's ecological bet, starting a path of no return in this line of wines; and finally, the sweet Pansal del Calàs, fruit of a coupage between Garnacha and Samsó, is a dense but fresh wine with a lot of typicity.
The winery's annual production is 650,000 bottles and a quarter of a million liters sold in bulk or in bag-in-box format.
