Buy Wine from Abadía Retuerta
Bodegas Abadía Retuerta is located in Sardon de Duero (Valladolid) no more than 10 kilometres away from the acclaimed Vega Sicilia vineyards. The property has over 700 hectares, 200 of them vineyards, presided by the Santa María de Retuerta monastery, dated 1146 where, as it was customary, vines were produced and even some varieties had been brought from Burgundy on purpose.
Joan Josep Abó, with Novartis pharmaceutical company support, founded Abadía Retuerta in 1988, having the priceless support of one of the ultimate referents in France: oenologist Pascal Delbeck, very young managing director (at 22) of Château Ausone and Château Bélair. However, it is Ángel Anocíbar who is actually managing the day-to-day labour at the winery. They met in Bordeaux while being students and both agree in producing wine beyond the trends (the discrepancies between Delbeck and Robert Parker are well-known).
The winery guideline is to strengthen plot wines and, thanks to the large extension of vineyards they have, they count with up to 54 different parcels with different micro-climates, different heights and obviously different lands. While clay soils are common near the river, hillsides are rich in cobbles whereas sand and limestone prevail in the highest part (almost 850 metres).
Abadía Retuerta was pioneer in technology application to the vineyards with the use of anti-freeze thermal towers and the application of the first selection tables; they are specially careful with maturity control at harvest, which is carried out manually and separately in each plot; wine making process is performed with small stainless steel vats, in order to respect each plot identity during fermentation; afterwards they have long ageing period in barrels. The varieties grown are: Tempranillo (70%), Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (10% each) and Merlot, Petit Verdot and other white grapes up to the 100% balance.
Amongst its wines Abadía Retuerta Selección Especial is the winery's calling card, a coupage of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot; it is a wine that joins complexity, elegance and roundness in perfect balance.
Pago Negralada is a Tempranillo single-variety wine, of grapes grown in gravel and sandy superficial soils that have a powerful personality in mouth and that will surely have a great evolution in bottle.
Pago Valdebellón is maybe the French spirit influence in the winery, a Cabernet Sauvignon single-variety of ripe fruit and excellent acidity.
Finally, Petit Verdot is clearly the flagship of the winery, an excellent example of this variety: a structured, deep wine, sort of sweet in the mouth.
The annual production of the winery is around 1.000.000 bottles.
