Winemaking
50% of the wine is obtained by skin soaking for 5 days. 30% of the wine is made in Qvevri amphorae with one month of skin contact. 20% of the wine is fermented and aged in old oak foudres. All wines are free-run fermented with indigenous yeasts, aged on the lees for 12 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered and lightly sulphited.
Description
Vino di Anna Palmentino Rosso is a vibrant and authentic expression of Sicily's volcanic terroir.
This wine is made from two cuvées made from Nerello Mascalese grapes (95%) grown organically and harvested by hand on the northern slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily. These terraced vineyards are located at high altitude (700 - 900 m) and are planted in bush form with an average age of 60 years. In addition to Nerello Mascalese, the vineyards are co-planted with small quantities of Nerello Cappuccio, Grenache and the indigenous white varieties Grecanico, Catarratto and Minnella Bianca, following the tradition of the area. These grapes are an essential part of the final wine, as they are harvested and fermented together with the Nerello Mascalese.
Elboration
The grapes were harvested in the last week of September and the first half of October. Forty percent of the final blend was made in a stone coupe located on the estate, with a short maceration of 6 days on the skins. The other 60% was vinified in an open wooden fermenter for 14 days, then pressed in a large wooden foudre. Both wines underwent spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts and rested on fine lees for 11 months before blending. Bottling was carried out without fining or filtration.
Taste
Palmentino Rosso is dry on the palate, with juicy, ripe tannins balanced by abundant red fruit flavours and mineral notes. The fresh acidity and underlying saline characteristics make this wine a unique taste experience, reflecting the rich heritage and volcanic terroir of the Etna region.
