The 2011 Vina Sastre Pesus is produced from very old vineyards of Tempranillo blended with 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged for 18 months in 200% new oak (yes, the wine is aged in a new barrique and then racked to another new barrique!). As you can guess the aromas are dominated by notes extracted from the oak, vanilla, cinnamon, clove, black pepper, espresso coffee, smoke and ultra-ripe fruit. The palate reveals a true heavyweight, with plenty of extraction, oak tannins and alcohol, in an XXL size. A mammoth wine, for fans of the style. I don't know what to say about the price asked. Drink 2016-2022.
