Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2004 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is very open, expressive and aromatic right away—as soon as it was poured into the glass—while the Tondonia took time to open up. This has a very elegant nose, and despite having less Garnacha than the Tondonia, it has a more Garnacha nose, a little heady with notes of cherries in liqueur and iodine (think Rayas). It has an elegant texture, very fine tannins and pungent flavors, and it's persistent and powerful while keeping balance and freshness. The Bosconia Vineyard is a cooler vineyard that delivers fresher wines; the grapes were picked quite late, from the 20th of October, later than the ones from the Tondonia vineyard. Only 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. Some of these vintages have had a much longer élevage, though not necessarily all in barrel, as the wines also spent time in the ancient oak vats.

Features

Description

Since its origins in the second half of the 19th century, López de Heredia has cultivated an unwavering philosophy: to respect the land, time and tradition. Under this premise Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is born, made exclusively in exceptional vintages with grapes from the historic El Bosque estate, on the banks of the Ebro, in the heart of La Rioja Alta. The clay-limestone soils and the continental Atlantic climate mould a slow-ripening vineyard, where each vine is worked with care and patience. The blend -mainly Tempranillo (80%), accompanied by Garnacha (15%), Graciano and Mazuelo (5%) - reflects a classic, complex and long-livedRioja, far from fashions and faithful to its essence.

Winemaking

The production of Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva follows a ritual that has hardly changed in more than a century. Fermentation in century-old oak vats with indigenous yeasts, followed by at least 10 years of ageing in American oak barrels, with manual racking every six months. Afterwards, a prolonged rest in the bottle allows the wine to refine its edges and gain harmony. It is clarified with egg whites and not filtered, allowing life to continue inside each bottle. The result is a work of extreme patience, a rarity even within Rioja.

Taste

Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva opens in the glass with a deep ruby colour, edged with subtle brick-red highlights. On the nose, it displays a classic range: ripe red fruit, leather, sweet spices, liquorice, tobacco and an earthy background reminiscent of damp forest. The palate is silky, with polished tannins and a firm acidity that elegantly supports its structure. Long, persistent, fresh despite the years, it offers echoes of candied fruit, nutmeg and chalky minerality. A wine that does not seek to dazzle, but to excite with its sobriety, depth and authenticity. A classic that is drunk with respect and remembered with gratitude.
