Description

Thomas Perseval Le Village was born in Chamery (Premier Cru), in the Montagne de Reims, where Champagne is no longer a "method" but a wine of place. Perseval comes from a farming family: before vines there were fields and cereals, and this peasant memory marked his character. When he returned to his village, he brought back an almost obstinate idea: if the soil is alive, the wine needs no disguise. The anecdote that best portrays him does not happen in the cellar, but between the rows: he insisted on planting cover crops, making his own compost and reducing chemicals to a minimum, even though many neighbours considered it an unnecessary complication. This courageous decision ended up defining his style: less intervention, more vineyard.

Thomas Perseval Le Village is his most direct statement: 100% Chardonnay from the "Le Village" parcel, with northern exposure, where at shallow depths the chalk/limestone tuff appears, cooling the wine's pulse and sharpening its nerve. In this Premier Cru Champagne, the cool climate and porous chalk support a natural tension that translates into precision and length.

Winemaking

At Thomas Perseval Le Village, the grapes enter healthy and ripe, seeking natural balance to avoid corrections. Spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts sets the tone from the start: more truth than make-up. Ageing takes place in 225 and 400 litre oak barrels, refining the texture without masking the chalky signature of the vineyard. After tirage, the wine rests patiently: a minimum of 48 months in bottle before disgorgement, gaining complexity and that subtle creaminess that sustains tension. The final touch is defining: Brut Nature, without dosage, so that the minerality of the chalk, the hillside and the climate are expressed without sugar to soften the message.

Taste

Thomas Perseval Le Village does not explode: it sparkles. The nose opens with lemon and lime, green apple and an undercurrent of wet chalk reminiscent of freshly split stone. The bubbles are very fine, persistent, sewing the wine to the palate. The palate is sharp and precise, with clean, almost athletic acidity, yet there is a surprising nuance of honey/honeycomb, subtle, more texture than sweetness, contrasting with the dryness of the Brut Nature. With air, a note of fine yeast emerges, no heavy pastries, and a salinity that lengthens the finish. It finishes dry, long, mineral, with that sensation of stone and cold breeze that leaves the tongue awake and asking for food: oysters, sashimi, grilled fish. Champagne for those looking for terroir, elegance and freshness rather than fireworks.
