Winemaking
Malolactic fermentation and ageing for 24 months in new French oak barrels.
Description
Terra Remota was born of an almost defiant idea: to reintroduce vines to a rugged, granitic landscape swept by the tramontana, where the Alt Empordà still retains a wild and deeply mineral character. The Bournazeau family did not choose the easy path. They opted for an isolated estate, characterised by Mediterranean woodland, poor soil and that proximity to the sea which brings light, salinity and vigour. From that bold decision emerged Terra Remota Clos Adrien, a blend of Syrah (90%) and Garnacha Negra (10%), designed to precisely express the serene strength of the Empordà D.O. Here there is no gratuitous exuberance or excessive ripeness; there is landscape, tension and an identity forged by rock and wind.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for Terra Remota Clos Adrien is designed to preserve the nobility of the fruit whilst, at the same time, taming its natural power without detracting from its character. The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates, with rigorous selection beginning right in the vineyard. In the winery, the bunches are checked again, destemmed and undergo a long fermentation lasting around six weeks, accompanied by gentle daily punching down. The aim is not brutal extraction, but measured depth, a fine texture and a structure that unfolds without harshness. The wine then spends 24 months in 500-litre French oak barrels, a size particularly suited to slow and precise ageing, where the wood does not overpower but rather refines the wine.
Flavour
Terra Remota Clos Adrien enters the glass with a quiet intensity. The nose opens with ripe black fruit – blackberry, blueberry and dark plum – but it soon becomes clear that this wine is not defined by fruit alone. Notes of wilted violets, liquorice, black pepper, fine cocoa, dried Mediterranean herbs and a hint of graphite and hot stone emerge, lending it an austere and noble character. It all smells of poor soil, wind and Mediterranean wine with a mineral edge.
On the palate, it takes on a serious character. The attack is broad and silky, but the tension soon takes the lead. The Syrah sets the tone with darkness, spice and firmness. The Garnacha Negra broadens the mid-palate with a meaty juiciness, without making it soft. The tannins are polished, yet still bite with elegance, confirming that this is a red wine with true ambition. The finish is long, dry and deep, with hints of bitter cocoa, scrubland and a granitic minerality that lingers longer than the fruit. A serious and highly distinctive wine from the Empordà.
