Description
If the soul of a wine could speak, San Román Garnacha would tell stories of ancient lands, wise vines and patient hands. It is a wine that does not shout, but whispers elegantly, allowing the Garnacha, that most expressive of grapes, to shine in all its authenticity.
This jewel comes from San Román Bodegas y Viñedos, a winery that has been able to interpret the terroir with mastery. San Román Garnacha is 100% Garnacha, without blends or distractions, born from old vines in goblet-trained vines over 60 years old, planted in sandy, poor and loose soils. These extreme conditions force the vines to struggle, and it is in this struggle that their character is born: a concentration of aromas and flavours that only Altura vineyards (710 metres, to be exact) can offer.
Winemaking
Winemaking is an exercise in respect. Harvested by hand in small 12 kg crates, each bunch arrives whole at the winery, where fermentation takes place spontaneously, without haste, with indigenous yeasts. There is no unnecessary filtration or aggressive intervention. Only time and patience do their job. After 21 days macerating with the skins, San Román Garnacha is aged in 500-litre French oak barrels for 18 months. It is a process designed to refine, not to impose.
Taste
If we close our eyes and think of San Román Garnacha, the first thing that comes to mind is freshness. Despite its 14.5% alcohol, it feels vibrant, juicy, as if every sip awakens the senses. Floral aromas intertwine with notes of ripe red fruits, while a background of spices and Mediterranean herbs adds a wild air.
On the palate, balance is key. The tannins are fine, well integrated, with a silky texture that envelops the palate without overwhelming. And then, that perfect acidity, the one that invites you to keep drinking, the one that keeps the wine alive, fresh, elegant. It is the kind of Garnacha that makes you forget your prejudices and reminds you why this grape is capable of thrilling when treated with the respect it deserves.
