Winemaking
Direct pressing, free run fermented with indigenous yeasts, malolactic fermentation, and aged on lees for 9 months in French oak barrels and demi-muids (500 litres). Second fermentation in bottle with a minimum ageing in bottle for 18 months, without final dosage (Brut Nature), unfiltered and without added sulphites.
Description
Just a few steps from the forest of Molesme, in the far north of the Côte des Bar, stands the small winery of Ruppert-Leroy, one of the most vibrant advocates of biodynamicChampagne. Emmanuel and Bénédicte, a couple in life and in wine, decided in the 2000s to make a radical turnaround in the old family vineyard: they abandoned conventional viticulture altogether to embrace the rhythms of the moon, plant infusions and biodiversity. In an act of almost poetic resistance to the industrialism of the sector, they gave up buying outside grapes and devoted themselves solely to vinifying their own fruit, plot by plot.
Ruppert-Leroy Puzzle was born as a free blend, without pre-established rules. Each year it is redrawn as another piece of the emotional puzzle that makes up their estate. Its composition intertwines Pinot Noir and Chardonnay -both grown in Kimmeridgian soils of marl and hard limestone, rich in marine fossils-, a type of terroir that brings a sharp, almost saline minerality to the wine. This area of the Aube, often in the shadows of other Champagne regions, offers here a wild, sincere expression, without make-up.
Winemaking
Ruppert-Leroy Puzzle is made with a meticulousness that borders on the obsessive, but without falling into sterile preciousness. The grapes are harvested by hand into small crates and pressed slowly, with an almost religious respect for the must. Fermentation starts spontaneously, without added yeasts, in used oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation also takes place, depending on the year.
Itis not filtered, it is not clarified, and it is bottled without added sulphites, under the principle of minimum intervention. Foaming is carried out following the champenoise method, but without dosage: this is an absolute Brut Nature. Ageing on the lees is usually between 18 and 24 months, allowing the wine to gain depth without losing its primary energy.
Taste
On uncorking Ruppert-Leroy Puzzle, one first perceives a faint vibration, like the breathing of the earth after a storm. The first attack on the nose is mineral, almost chalky, with notes of wet stone, gypsum, and a faint echo of dried citrus rind. There are no concessions to lush fruit. Instead, there is tension, aeration, and an austere but deeply elegant fragrance: lemon zest, scraped chalk, a whisper of white wild flowers.
On the palate, Ruppert Leroy Puzzle glides like a clean edge. Agile, electrifying, with a very fine, well-integrated bubble that does not distract but guides. There are hints of green apple, raw almond and a touch of pink grapefruit in the background. But what dominates is the sensation of purity.
