Direct pressing, free run fermented with indigenous yeasts, malolactic fermentation and ageing on lees for 9 months in French oak barrels and demi-muids (500 litres). Second fermentation in bottle with a minimum ageing of 18 months, without final dosage (Brut Nature), disgorged by hand, unfiltered and without added sulphites.
Description
At the southernmost tip of the Champagne region, almost bordering on Burgundy, lies the small commune of Essoyes, on the Côte des Bar. Here, in a corner where the landscape already slopes towards the gentle reliefs of the Aube, the Ruppert-Leroy family cultivates its vines with a devotion bordering on the mystical. Bénédicte Leroy, formerly a horse rider and groom, has bravely returned to her parents' land to turn what was once a simple delivery of grapes to the cooperative into an artisanal, living, radically biodynamic winery. No additives, no make-up, no added sugar. Just wine.
Ruppert Leroy 11,12,13 is a unique creation: a blend of three consecutive vintages, from plots cultivated without herbicides or pesticides, where the natural vegetation cover is an essential part of the vineyard's balance. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir - grown on soils of Kimmeridgian marl, with fossils that reveal the area's marine past - give life to this cuvée that dispenses with the expedition liqueur. Champagne in its purest form. Brut Nature without make-up. The tradition here is not one of protocol, but of rebellious authenticity.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, as they should be when respect for the grape is everything. The grapes arrive at the winery in small crates, are gently pressed in a traditional vertical press, and fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts in used barrels. Each vintage is vinified separately, without filtration or fining, and with no sulphur added at any time. Once the three vintages are blended, the wine undergoes its second fermentation in the bottle and rests on the lees for more than two years. No dosage, no corrections. Ruppert Leroy 11,12,13 is an act of faith in the grape, in the land and in time.
Taste
Ruppert Leroy 11,12,13 presents itself with a very fine, almost whispering effervescence that lets the minerality take centre stage from the first contact. On the nose, this is a Champagne for purists: candied lemon peel, wet chalk, green apple peel, with an ethereal background of raw walnut and dried camomile. No concessions to lush fruit or easy sweetness.
On the palate, the tension is immediate, like a straight line of saline energy that runs across the palate. Vibrant, dry, with an acidity that stretches out like an echo between stones. Notes of white grapefruit, fresh almonds and sourdough bread appear, with a finish reminiscent of the sea breeze, with its touch of iodine and a light austerity that captivates.
