Description
Pierre Péters L'Esprit Grand Cru is born of a deep conviction: Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs can achieve an almost transcendental purity when it is interpreted without artifice. The Péters family, historically based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, has built its reputation on precision and patience. Pierre Péters L'Esprit is not an annual cuvée, but a statement reserved only for the finest and most balanced vintages. On more than one occasion it has been decided not to make it if the vintage did not reach the required level, a clear demonstration of rigour and consistency. It comes exclusively from four Grand Cru vineyards in Le Mesnil, Avize, Cramant and Oger, all planted with 100% Chardonnay. Four mythical villages that bring tension, breadth, texture and depth under the common stamp of chalky soils, responsible for its marked verticality and mineral energy in this great Champagne Blanc de Blancs.
Winemaking
At Pierre Péters L'Esprit Grand Cru, harvesting is manual and meticulous, with a strict selection of bunches. Pressing is carried out in a gentle and fractioned manner to obtain the purest musts. Alcoholic fermentation takes place mainly in stainless steel tanks, preserving the aromatic clarity and direct expression of the terroir. Depending on the vintage, malolactic fermentation is allowed to harmonise the acidity without losing tension.
In Pierre Péters L'Esprit Grand Cru, the blend integrates the mineral straightness of Le Mesnil, the aromatic amplitude of Avize, the silkiness of Cramant and the balanced ripeness of Oger. The second fermentation takes place in the bottle, followed by a long ageing on the lees in the maison's cellars, adding complexity and finesse to the bubbles. The dosage is contained, between 4.5 and 5.5 g/L, reinforcing its dry and elegant profile, typical of a high-precision Grand Cru Champagne.
Taste
In the glass, Pierre Péters L'Esprit Grand Cru has a very fine and persistent finish. The nose is precise and mineral: wet chalk, limestone and a pulse of fresh lemon and vibrant lime. With air, notes of green apple, subtle pear and a delicate hint of light brioche emerge.
On the palate the entry is straight and taut, supported by firm acidity that sweeps across the palate with energy. The texture, refined by the ageing, provides a silky sensation that balances the verticality. The finish is long, dry and saline, with echoes of citrus and a chalky persistence that defines its character. A Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru of precision, purity and uncompromising elegance.
