Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The second vintage of a mostly Garnacha red is the 2023 Buruzagi, produced with a majority of Garnacha from the village of Camprovín and some Monastel Riojano (Morate) and a small portion of white grapes, Viura and Garnacha Blanca. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in 600-liter barrels for 10 months. It feels more Mediterranean than the rest of the reds from 2023, with notes of esparto grass, dry hay and straw, with a lactic hint and abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's ripe at 14.5% alcohol, keeping a low pH of 3.4. This is an earthier and more rustic expression here. Only 900 bottles were filled in September 2024.

Features

Description

In the remote village of Camprovín, in La Rioja Alta, Oxer Buruzagi was born, a wine that embodies the non-conformist vision of Oxer Bastegieta, a Basque winemaker who challenges the classic Rioja moulds with a fresh, almost poetic look. His bond with the land is not one of mastery, but of listening. Oxer, has opted for a base of old Garnacha accompanied by Monastel Riojano, an almost extinct variety, and a slight percentage of Viura and Garnacha Blanca, which brings brightness and tension to the whole. The decision to include whites in the coupage was a risky one, but coherent with its search for verticality and freshness.

The vineyards are located on poor, clay-limestone soils, at high altitudes, with strong thermal oscillation and a climate that alternates Mediterranean warmth with Atlantic impulses. The environment is wild, almost savage, and this translates into a wine of nerve, with a beautiful rusticity.

Winemaking

Oxer Buruzagi is vinified in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts and minimal intervention. Subsequently, the wine is aged for 10 months in used 600-litre barrels, which do not impose aromas but refine the texture. The ageing is serene, respectful, seeking structure without artifice. Only 900 bottles are produced, bottled in September without filtering or fining.

Taste

Oxer Buruzagi opens with notes of esparto grass, dry hay, wild cherry and thyme, accompanied by a lactic and earthy nuance that anchors it to the landscape. The palate is direct, dry and firm, with fine but marked tannins and a vibrant acidity that runs through it like a taut thread. Hints of pomegranate, wet earth and dried flower appear, all wrapped in an austere, sincere texture. It is a wine that does not seek to be easy, but honest. Restless, mineral and profoundly Riojan, albeit from a less travelled shore. Ideal for those who enjoy wine as an exploration.
