Buy Wine with Malbec
Malbec is an ancient variety original from the Lot et Garonne department and very used in wines of the appellation Cahors. This is a vigorous grape, sensitive to millerandage, though in the last years and through clone selection, this problem has been quite controlled. Young grapevines risk suffering spring frosts and the secondary outbreaks are not very fruitful, it has medium ripening and berries become detached when mature. It is also prone to suffer excoriosis (dead arm) and leafhopper insects.
Even though the Malbec variety is original from the southwest part of France, its gravitational centre moved to the southern hemisphere thanks to the success of Argentinean Malbec wines and also because the Malbec grapevines affected by 1956 frosts were not replaced in the Bordeaux region. If the harvest is too early, Malbec wines will have herbal flavours and tannins can be astringent and bitter. Domaine Cosse Maisonneuve produces some of the best Cahors examples.
