Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The only Douro white from granite soils, the 2023 Tiara is a blend of Rabigato (all whites have a lot of Rabigato, which provides very good acidity), Códega de Larinho, Donzelinho, Cercial and other varieties (perhaps some Alvarinho too) from very old vines at 600 meters in altitude. It fermented and aged in old, neutral oak foudres (1,300 to 2,500 liters) to give it a crystalline and pure character. It has austerity, contained ripeness and a balanced mouthfeel, with the granite granularity and a salty twist. It's surprisingly expressive for its young age, and it feels harmonious even after a very recent bottling. It feels like the 2023s are quite approachable. This is characterful, with a mixture of savory, floral and herbal notes, super tasty and pungent. It has terrific balance and is approachable but should also age. 13,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2025. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered, perhaps that's why it feels so expressive.

Description
Niepoort Tiara is a light white wine whose elegance, firmness and vibrant energy testify to its heritage: high altitude sites planted with vines over 60 years old in the Douro region. These vineyards are located 600 metres above sea level, with Códega do Larinho being the predominant grape variety. Fermented with natural yeasts, the wine retains its fresh and elegant character.
Winemaking
Harvest began in mid-August, with ideal indicators: musts with high acidity levels, low alcohol content and wonderfully firm berry skins that were ideal for the red and white wines.
After careful selection in the vineyards, the grapes were transported to the winery in 25 kg boxes in a temperature-controlled truck. A second selection took place in the winery before the grapes were gently pressed into a stainless steel tank where the must was left to settle at a low temperature. The wine was then racked into a barrel where it ferments spontaneously for approximately one year (undergoing alcoholic and malolactic fermentation) under controlled temperature conditions.
Taste
Niepoort Tiara is a white wine that shows the purity of the grape varieties and the acidity of its terroir. What makes the difference is its long fermentation period at low temperatures in wooden barrels over 30 years old with capacities of 1500 to 3000 litres. The wine's bouquet is subtle, revealing aromas of citrus, stone fruits and an herbaceous note that adds character and complexity. On the palate, a pleasantly full and structured body gives way to an expressive and almost spicy finish, prolonged by the wine's excellent acidity.
