Description
At Mythopia, wine is not made to tame the mountain, but to listen to it. Romaine and Hans-Peter Schmidt cultivate their vines in Arbaz, in Switzerland, guided by a philosophy that is, in itself, a statement of intent: to view the vineyard as a living ecosystem rather than a mere plantation. That is why, from the very beginning, they eschewed the convenience of conventional viticulture to surround their vines with trees, flowers, beneficial insects and genuine biodiversity. Mythopia Moravagine stems from this radical, almost obstinate outlook, and is perceived as a wine that does not seek to please easily, but rather to express a deep connection with the land. It is made from Chasselas, Switzerland’s most iconic white grape variety, which here takes on a much freer, wilder and more textural character. In Valais, with its alpine climate, intense light and steep slopes, the variety acquires a mineral precision and a natural tension that, in this wine, translates into something particularly unique.
Production
Mythopia Moravagine is a Chasselas orange wine that deliberately departs from any notion of a classic or polished white wine. The winemaking process centres on skin maceration, which imparts depth, structure and a very distinctive tactile quality. The wine is aged in used wooden barrels, not to imbue it with toasty aromas, but to allow it to breathe, gain complexity and develop a fuller, more serene texture. Unfiltered bottling is in keeping with the philosophy of minimal intervention that defines Mythopia: allowing the wine to retain its energy, its nuances and also its subtle rough edges.
Flavour
In the glass, Mythopia Moravagine offers neither exuberant fruit nor a complacent profile. From the very first sip, ripe pear, dried citrus peel, mountain herbs and a hint of lightly toasted almond emerge. All this is underpinned by an earthy, salty sensation that serves as a reminder of the skins, time and patience invested here. The palate is full-bodied but not soft; it has bite, a light tannic structure and a piercing freshness that tightens the finish. It is a complex Swiss wine, somewhat wild, deeply mineral and with a serious, mountainous and free-spirited energy.
