Description

From the gentle limestone slopes of Courgis, a breath away from the historic heart of Chablis, Mélissa Bazin and Romain De Moor cultivate an intimate and radical vision of wine. Both with a background in the great houses of Burgundy, they decided to turn their careers around and dedicate themselves to a viticulture with a slow pulse and a raw essence. No marketing, no artifice, just the vineyard as a compass. Their project, La Petite Empreinte, is not intended to leave an indelible mark, but a slight but sincere sign: a gesture towards a less domesticated Burgundy.

La Petite Empreinte Tapis Rouge is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, grown in small plots on Kimmeridgian soils and chalky loams. Here, where Chardonnay normally reigns supreme, this red interpretation challenges the local canon with restrained elegance and an energy closer to the earth than to the label. The vines, farmed organically without compromise, are cultivated without herbicides or systemic treatments, and with as little intervention as possible. The choice not to add sulphites or oenological products, even in complex vintages, is a declaration of faith in the purity of the site.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, in small boxes, with a first selection in the vineyard. The whole grapes are vatted without destemming, in a slow maceration that lasts 10 to 15 days, with no temperature control, no pumping over or violent pigeage. An infusion rather than an extraction, where delicacy is the law. Fermentation is spontaneous, conducted by indigenous yeasts. The wine then rests in used Burgundy barrels for 12 months, without racking, fining or filtering. Bottling, by gravity, is carried out without added sulphites.

Taste

La Petite Empreinte Tapis Rouge is everything a Pinot Noir from cool climate and chalky soils can offer without make-up. The nose is shy at first, almost monastic, but opens up with air to reveal subtle layers of wild blueberry, black cherry, green tea and wet stone. There is no excess of fruit, but an elegant tension between austerity and purity. The mineral trace is clear, with a background of gypsum and chalk, a kind of echo of the soil. On the palate, the wine is sharp, linear, but juicy, with very fine tannins and a precise acidity reminiscent of the edge of a leaf. The finish, saline and long, leaves a sensation of minty freshness and a slight umami note.

A wine for those who love controlled fragility, taut profiles and the sensation that the wine has been listened to rather than moulded. Tapis Rouge does not seek to be opulent, but true.
