Winemaking
Free-run fermented with indigenous yeasts with 90% whole bunches and 12 days of maceration. Aged for 12 months in old oak barrels. Bottled unfined, unfiltered and with no added sulphites.
Description
On the discreet slopes of the Coteaux Bourguignons, where the winemaking history is intertwined with the harshness of the climate and the minerality of the soil, Mélissa Bazin and Romain De Moor decided to write a new chapter: more intimate, wilder, more sincere. La Petite Empreinte Gamay is not a wine of high-sounding proclamations, but of quiet convictions. Both come from the most classic Burgundian universe, and have decided to break away from orthodoxy to follow a more intuitive path, centred on the life of the soil, respect for the natural cycle of the vine and minimal intervention in the cellar.
The Gamay they grow grows on clay-limestone soils with veins of marl and hard limestone outcrops, typical of northern Burgundy. The climate is temperate but irregular, which means that each plot has to be worked with surgical precision. The result is a wine that does not seek to resemble anything: neither the lush Beaujolais, nor the finest Burgundian Pinot, but speaks with its own voice-light, mineral, lively. A small footprint, but one that lingers.
Winemaking
Vinification is carried out on a small scale, almost as if in a sensitive laboratory. The grapes are harvested by hand, in small crates, and fermented in whole bunches, by semi-carbonic maceration. Romain and Mélissa avoid aggressive pumping over and pigeage: they aim for delicate extraction, without breaking the vibrant energy of the Gamay. The entire process is carried out with indigenous yeasts and without additives. Ageing takes place in neutral barrels and used demi-muids for 6 to 8 months, allowing the wine to breathe without becoming saturated with wood. Bottling is done without filtration or fining, and with little or no sulphur added, depending on the energy of the vintage.
Taste
From the nose, La Petite Empreinte Gamay shows itself in a minor key: wilted flowers, damp earth, a whisper of red fruits that don't explode butfloat-wild raspberry, pomegranate, a hint of dried hibiscus. It is a wine that does not impose itself, but insinuates itself. On the palate, the texture is smooth, the tannin barely marked but firm, with an acidity that runs through the centre of the palate like a taut thread. There is some chalk, crushed granite, fresh cherry juice. The finish is long and saline, with a clarity that seems to come from the soil rather than the fruit. This is a wine for those who listen rather than those who seek spectacle: pure, free, full of nuances that reveal themselves with each sip.
