Description
Deep in Courgis, in the Burgundian Yonne, where the Kimmeridgian soils crack in the sun and the wind blows through the vineyards like a mineral sigh, the wines of La Petite Empreinte are born. There, Mélissa Bazin and Romain De Moor have patiently and convincingly sculpted a viticulture that listens rather than imposes, that breathes with the land rather than dominating it. Their project, small in scale but immense in sensitivity, aims to leave just a trace - LaPetite Empreinte -on the landscape. His wine Mas a Tierra is a declaration of intent: a Pinot Noir from west-facing slopes, on soils of living limestone, worked organically, with plant cover and without aggressive intervention. A viticulture of observation, of active listening, where each plant counts.
Winemaking
Harvesting is done manually, in small boxes, with direct selection in the vineyard. The bunches enter the winery whole, without destemming, and begin a natural carbonic maceration that lasts between 21 and 30 days. Extractions are minimal: just one or two manual pigeages, seeking to respect the finesse of the grapes and the most subtle expression of the terroir. Fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, allowing Mas a Tierra to follow its own rhythm.
Ageing is carried out for 11 months in used oak barrels, without racking, fining or filtering. It is bottled with a minimal dose of sulphur, just to protect its journey. The whole process aims to preserve the essentials: the purity of the fruit, the vibrancy of the soil, the precision of the place.
Taste
La Petite Empreinte Mas a Tierra does not seek prominence; it reveals itself with serene elegance. The nose is delicate but precise: fresh cherry, wild raspberry, a faint trace of mint and wet stone. No artifice or wood protagonist. On the palate it is a wine of restrained tension, juicy, with a fluid texture but with a clear backbone. The acidity is lively, without edges, and accompanies a finish that lengthens with notes of undergrowth, cold spices and a minerality that recalls the chalk and the silence of the early mornings in Courgis. A wine of landscape, of intense calm, that imposes itself without pushing.
