Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch is a dynamic wine that unfolds over hours and then days. In the beginning, the nose is dominated by citrus and saline, but with time it reveals apricot, citrus blossoms, green pineapple and exotic undertones. The medium-bodied palate pairs concentration and freshness. Its ripe, satiny, mouth-coating flavors are enlivened by bright acidity, and its long, flavorful, juicy finish calls you back for another taste.

Description
Kistler has never been a winery of "making noise". Rather, it was born as a stubborn idea: to pursue a Chardonnay in California that relied not on volume and make-up, but on precision. In years when many were looking for immediate power, Kistler chose a slower, riskier path: cool vineyards, contained yields, harvests seeking tension rather than sweetness, and an almost Burgundian faith that terroir rules. It is said that when the market demanded "easier" profiles, the winery stood firm, even at the cost of explaining time and again why they preferred verticality to exuberance. Dutton Ranch - a legendary name in Sonoma - fits that philosophy like a glove: plots in the cold, windy corridor of the Russian River Valley/GreenValley, where the fog rolls in like a metronome and lengthens ripening. Here Chardonnay does not become tropical; it becomes precise. The soils, with sands and gravels of alluvial origin and fine layers of good drainage, force the vines to work and express that addictive mix of restrained fruit and saline minerality. This wine is Californian Chardonnay in its purest form.
Winemaking
In Kistler Dutton Ranch Chardonnay, the grapes enter the winery with freshness intact, harvested at cooler times to preserve acidity and aromas. It is gently pressed and the must ferments in French oak barrels: the wood here is not make-up, it is micro-oxygenation, texture and architecture. Fermentation proceeds unhurriedly and the wine remains on its lees, gaining a creamy centre that comes not from sugar but from ageing and time. Malolactic fermentation, when it takes place, seeks to round the edge without blurring the line. Barrel ageing lasts approximately 11 months, with measured use of new oak to add depth and fine spice. Bottling prioritises stability and energy, with minimal intervention.
Taste
In Kistler Dutton Ranch Chardonnay, the nose enters with intent: lemon and lime, crisp apple, firm pear, then wet stone, chalk and a hint of sea salt. With air, white hazelnut and a whisper of brioche. The palate is direct and electric: athletic acidity that sharpens and cleanses, silky and taut texture, and a chalky finish with lemon zest, fresh almond and lingering salinity. A cool, luminous, straight, gastronomic white wine that convinces without shouting.
