Description
At Gevrey-Chambertin, Pinot Noir does not try to please: it tries to be faithful. And at Maison Joseph Drouhin - in the family since 1880 - this loyalty translates into a rare blend of tradition and quiet courage. One gesture sums it up: in 1976, Robert Drouhin put his trust in Laurence Jobard, one of the first female winemakers in Burgundy, when it was not yet "the norm", but a decision against the tide. Over time, the house pushed for a cleaner and more conscious viticulture: less intervention, more vines, more soil. Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin (100% Pinot Noir) was born in the north of the Côte de Nuits, in communes like Gevrey-Chambertin and Brochon, where the calcareous and poor soils, with layers of red-brown clay loam, give structure and that mineral signature, more of stone than of perfume.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand into aerated crates and, if necessary, rigorously sorted to ensure that only healthy fruit enters. It is 100% destemmed and fermentation-maceration lasts 2-3 weeks in small open vats, with punching down and pumping over adjusted to the profile of the vintage; it ferments with indigenous yeasts. Pressing is done in a vertical press and fractions are separated according to tasting, looking for texture precision. The ageing is refined without imposing: 14-16 months in French oak barrels, with 20-25% new wood from French forests of high quality, to provide support without disguising the identity of the Burgundy terroir - a philosophy of refinement that is also recognised in Joseph Drouhin Nuits-Saint Georges.
Taste
Bright ruby, transparent Burgundy. On the nose, black cherry and wild blackberry open the game, followed by a trace of liquorice and fine spices. The wood is a whisper: it accompanies, but does not dominate. With air, nuances of leather appear, a hint of nutmeg and, later, that note of damp earth and mushrooms that takes the wine from "pretty" to "serious". On the palate, Gevrey-Chambertin shows its spine: firm but polished tannin, freshness that cleanses and a velvety texture that broadens the centre without losing tension. The finish is long, dark and spicy, more earthy than sweet, leaving a trail of ripe black fruit and warm stone. If you enjoy the classic nerve of Joseph Drouhin Nuits-Saint-Georges, you'll find the same Burgundian pulse here, with a rockier, sterner accent. Serve around 16°C; if you decant it, it gains clarity and depth.
