Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Disgorged in November 2022 with two grams per liter dosage, the NV Extra-Brut Cuvée No. 746 is based on the 2018 vintage. The grapes were sourced from Avize and Oiry (32%) and Hauvillers (68%). Showing nicely, it offers up a delicate, ripe bouquet with aromas of baked bread, ripe orchard fruits, almonds, dried flowers and smoke. Medium to full-bodied, it’s fleshy with an enveloping core of fruit, a pinpoint mousse and a delicate, perfumed, ripe orchard fruit-inflected finish.

Description
At Champagne Jacquesson, the "cuvée without vintage" is no longer a uniform but a diary: each edition is numbered to tell the story of the year honestly, without make-up and with the pulse of the vineyard. Jacquesson Cuvée 746 is born from this idea -valiant in Champagne- of pursuing precision rather than repetition. Its base is 2018, with grapes from Aÿ, Dizy and Hautvillers (68%) and Avize and Oiry (32%), a map that alternates the chalky caress of the Côte des Blancs with the earthier nerve of the Vallée de la Marne. The three classic varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir dominate the blend, refined in an extra brut key.
Winemaking
For Jacquesson Cuvée 746, the year was generous: a very rainy winter, a mild and stormy spring, and from June onwards a dry and bright weather that brought forward the harvest (from 30 August to 11 September), with healthy, ripe grapes and moderate acidity. The house works to capture that ripeness without losing the line: selection of plots, careful pressing and a blend construction that incorporates reserve wines to gain depth without losing the fine line. Foaming takes place in the bottle and the wine rests for a long period on the lees to polish texture and complexity before disgorgement. The dosage is surgical: 2 g/l, just right to round off without sweetening and maintain the extra brut character.
Taste
In the glass it does not shout: Jacquesson Cuvée 746 whispers with class, like a Champagne that prefers the edge to the foam. The first impression is of clean citrus fruit - lemon, grapefruit peel - and restrained white fruit, like crisp apple. Then comes the signature of the house: a chalky minerality that dries the corner of your mouth and makes you salivate, with a touch of fine brioche that doesn't sweeten, but only gives relief.
The palate is taut and vertical: very fine bubbles, direct attack, salinity and that "chalky" sensation that tidies everything up. The minimal dosage leaves the wine sharp, real extra brut, and yet 2018 provides an elegant centre, without heaviness. Long, vibrant finish, with echoes of citrus, fine bakery and a mineral tension that forces you -happily- to return to the glass.
