Description
Jean-Jacques Confuron has never been one for making a fuss. The family, now led by Sophie Meunier-Confuron and Alain Meunier, realised early on that the vineyard should not be forced, but listened to. This gave rise to an approach based on respect for the soil, organic farming and patient viticulture, even when this meant making difficult decisions that were not yet in vogue. That spirit is evident in this Coteaux de l’Auxois Pinot Noir Clos de la Romanée, a wine that does not seek to appear more noble than it already is, but rather to express its terroir with honesty. It comes from the Auxois, to the west of the Côte-d’Or, an area less celebrated than the Côte de Nuits, yet deeply Burgundian, with clay-limestone soils, stony slopes and a continental climate that lends freshness, tension and a vibrant pulse. The grape variety is, naturally, Pinot Noir.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for J.J. Confuron Coteaux de l’Auxois Pinot Noir Clos de la Romanée follows a classic and precise approach, very much in keeping with the estate’s philosophy. From the moment the grapes arrive, the aim is to preserve purity and energy, avoiding any excessive extraction or overripeness. Vinification relies on traditional Burgundian methods, with fermentation designed to keep the character of the fruit and the soil intact. The wine is aged for 15 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with 15 per cent new oak, refining the wine without masking it, using wood sparingly to add depth, spice and structure, but without overshadowing the identity of the Pinot Noir. Everything is geared towards subtlety, towards allowing the wine to breathe from within, rather than building it up from the outside.
Flavour
In the J.J. Confuron Coteaux de l’Auxois Pinot Noir Clos de la Romanée, the nose does not present itself as an exuberant or easy-drinking Pinot Noir. There are notes of fresh cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, but something more serious soon emerges: damp earth, delicate undergrowth, a hint of spice and a subtle, almost stony minerality. On the palate, it is direct, juicy and lively, with silky tannins, crisp acidity and fresh red fruit that unfolds without feeling heavy. The finish offers red fruit, an earthy undertone and a briny freshness that makes it particularly well-suited to food. Burgundy with backbone, unvarnished.
