Description
At the Atlantic end of the Loire Valley, where the ocean wind cleanses the sky and forces the vines to sink their roots deep, Domaine de L'Ecu Ange is born. Here there are no concessions, no make-up, no technology at the service of comfort. Only 0.47 ha facing Southwest, planted on gneiss and orthogneiss subsoils that force the Pinot Noir to speak in a mineral, tense and almost electric dialect.
The estate has been working in organic farming since 1975 and in Demeter certified biodynamics since 1998. It is not a fashion, it is a conviction. Yields of just 25 hl/ha, ploughing, green work, Simple Guyot pruning: everything is focused on concentration, energy and identity. Here we are not looking for exuberant fruit, but for truth. And truth, in this case, tastes of stone, salty wind and crunchy red fruit.
Winemaking
At Domaine de l'Ecu Ange, the grapes are harvested 100% by hand. The grapes are received by gravity, without pumps. Whole bunches, without destemming, in a short maceration of just 10 days. The aim is not to extract, but to insinuate. The pneumatic pressing is precise, almost surgical.
Fermentation is carried out exclusively with indigenous yeasts. Nothing is corrected. Nothing is adjusted. Ageing for 10 months in amphorae, without SO2, is a declaration of principles: subtle micro-oxygenation, zero external aromatic influence, pure texture and contained energy. No fining. No filtration. No added sulphur. At Domaine de l'Ecu Ange, the wine is bottled as it is. Alive.
Taste
In Domaine de l'Ecu Ange, the nose is initially reserved, even with a hint of wildness. Then it opens up and shows sour cherry, fresh raspberry, pomegranate, but always enveloped in a layer of mineral dust and hot stone. There is an earthy, slightly smoky nuance, with echoes of black tea and dried herbs. This is not a sweet-toothed Pinot Noir. It is a Pinot Noir that demands attention.
On the palate, Domaine de l'Ecu Ange is pure tension. The Atlantic acidity sharpens the whole and launches it in a straight line. The red fruit is precise, crisp, almost biting. The tannin is fine but firm, structured without being heavy. The amphora provides a silky texture that contrasts with this vibrant energy. The finish is long, saline, slightly earthy, with a persistence more reminiscent of rock than fruit.
A Loire Pinot Noir without a net, without protection, without make-up. Radical in its purity. Domaine de l'Ecu Ange is for those who prefer uncomfortable authenticity to aromatic complacency.
