Description
In Vingrau, in the harsh Agly valley, Hervé Bizeul arrived not with a recipe but with a fixed idea: to prove that Roussillon could produce terroir red wine - dense, precise and fine - without falling into Mediterranean excess. He and Claudine built Clos des Fées amid impossible slopes and stubbornness. There is an anecdote that sums it up: when they insisted on "rounding off" the wine with more cellar tricks, he preferred to tighten up the work in the vineyard and accept the severity of the old plots. If the land spoke with an austere tone, the wine had to preserve it.
Hence Clos des Fées Vieilles Vignes, a French AOC Côtes du Roussillon Villages wine made from old vines (50 to 100 years old) on clay-limestone soils with a high pH, at an altitude of 250 m, with the tramontana sweeping away moisture and leaving a clean ripeness, without heaviness. The blend combines Cariñena (40%) for backbone, Garnacha Tinta ( 35%) for volume and dark fruit, Lladoner Pelut (15%) for wild perfume and Syrah (10%) for spicy shade.
Winemaking
At Clos des Fées Vieilles Vignes, the grapes are harvested in the vineyard and transported in a refrigerated truck to protect freshness. After destemming, cold pre-fermentation maceration and fermentation at controlled temperatures. The extractions are conscious: daily pumping over and punching down, looking for texture without rusticity. Maceration for 20 to 25 days, devatting and resting in tanks for about 2 months before blending. Ageing is focused on polishing, not making up: 12 months without racking in a single batch, with ageing in concrete "the old-fashioned way", and bottling when the wine is already breathing together.
Taste
Clos des Fées Vieilles Vignes is not a wine of immediate fruit. It opens seriously: liquorice, black pepper, clove and undergrowth, with blackberry and plum in the background. The palate is concentrated but upright, with energy: the black fruit is supported by a mineral backbone and a saline touch. The tannin falls silky, almost velvety, and the finish lengthens with dried herbs and warm spices. It gives pleasure young if you aerate it, but its true depth appears with some bottle age: a southern red with rock and wind, more precision than muscle.
