Description
“Quant”is not just a name: in the Moselle-Franconian dialect spoken by the Loewen family, it means something profoundly good—that feeling of being at ease—a shared meal, laughter, an evening that flows effortlessly—and this German Riesling aims to capture exactly that. In theMosel, where the slopes reign and the river sets the pace, the winery makes a decision as simple as it is bold: to wait. To let the grapes ripen well into October, when the air is already crisp and the harvest arrives cold at the winery, to gain aromatic expression without losing its edge. There is no pretence here: just Riesling and the landscape. A wine designed for everyday enjoyment, yet with the mineral energy that only the Mosel slate can provide.
Production
For Carl Loewen Riesling Quant, the grapes arrive cold and are gently pressed to preserve their purity. The must is cooled and the crucial stage begins: spontaneous fermentation (with indigenous yeasts), a slow process lasting weeks, guided by the natural chill of late autumn. This slow process preserves the wine’s tension and usually leaves a slight natural residual sugar: not to sweeten, but to smooth the edge of the acidity and give a dry yet pleasant sensation. The ageing process remains focused on precision and clean fruit, seeking clarity before bottling.
Flavour
In Carl Loewen Riesling Quant, the nose first reveals minerality: damp slate, cold air, then a crisp citrus note —lime, lemonzest —and crisp white fruit: green apple and a hint of barely ripe peach. Nothing exuberant; everything is straightforward, fresh and very Mosel. On the palate, it is a fresh and electric Riesling: the acidity cuts a fine line, like a scalpel, and that slight cushion of natural sweetness makes it more gastronomic and dangerously drinkable. The finish is medium-long, with a salivating sensation, echoes of citrus and a mineral aftertaste that calls for another sip. A white wine for long tables, fish, mild spices and conversations that drag on — that’s Quant.
