The 2018 L'Equilibrista is a blend of 55% Garnacha, 30% Syrah and 15% Cariñena that fermented in stainless and matured in 225- and 500-liter French oak barrels for 14 months. It has character, some rusticity and dusty tannins and in need of powerful food. The oak feels quite integrated, but there's a spicy and smoky touch and a bitter twist in the finish. 39,200 bottles and 1,000 magnums.

Ca N’Estruc was literally born in the shadow of Montserrat, in Esparreguera, where an estate documented as far back as 1574 learned to coexist with the ‘magical’ mountain long before it became fashionable to talk about landscape. The Martí family were pioneers within the DO Catalunya and, in a move as pragmatic as it was bold, they transformed the vineyard: they replaced the old bush-trained vines with trellised ones, replanted and refined the plots in search of the best adaptation… and, once they were on the right track, decided to push even further: organic viticulture and, later, biodynamic farming. Ca N’Estruc L’Equilibrista is their way of walking the tightrope between the Mediterranean and precision: 55% Garnacha Tinta, 30% Syrah and 15% Samsó, from vines aged 25 to 50 years on alluvial clay-limestone soils with gravel, at 165 m. A red wine of patience, crafted so that the fruit neither shouts nor hides.

Production

At Ca N’Estruc L’Equilibrista, hand-harvesting and selection in the vineyard set the pace. Destemming and fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks (100–200 hl), at 21–28 °C, with daily pumping over. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place in the same tanks (18–20 °C). This is followed by 14 months of barrel ageing: the Cariñena is aged in 225- and 500-litre barrels made of French (Allier) and American oak, seeking an unadorned structure.

Taste

In Ca N’Estruc L’Equilibrista, the colour is a vivid garnet, ruby at the rim. The nose opens with red and black fruit —cherry and plum—and immediately reveals its ‘serious’ side: subtle toasty notes, cocoa, vanilla and tobacco, with black pepper and liquorice in the background. On the palate, it lives up to its name: a balance between body and freshness. A rounded attack, silky texture, gentle yet present tannins (that well-integrated oak touch), and a spicy finish that calls for the grill: grilled meats, mushrooms, pulses or a hearty rice dish. Serve at 14–15°C to allow the fruit to breathe and the mountain to speak.
