Description
Barranco Oscuro Cerro Las Monjas is an outstanding example of Alpujarra viticulture in Granada, produced by the Barranco Oscuro winery, managed by Manuel and Lorenzo Valenzuela. This red wine is a meticulously balanced blend of Garnacha (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Merlot (10%). The grapes come exclusively from the Cerro Las Monjas plot, which is located at an altitude of 1,368 metres. The vines are over 40 years old and are planted on poor, stony slate soils, which contributes to a very low yield of 6.7 hl/Ha.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Barranco Oscuro Cerro Las Monjas includes destemming and a maceration of 7 to 10 days, followed by an ageing of three years in barrels. The wine was bottled in autumn, without adding sulphites and with a total SO2 of less than 6 mg/l. Production is limited to 1,800 bottles.
Taste
Barranco Oscuro Cerro Las Monjas is a powerful and potent wine, characterised by its depth and minerality. Its flavour is long and has a remarkable freshness, which can even be described as expectorant. The combination of the three grape varieties brings a unique complexity: the Garnacha offers fruity and spicy notes, the Cabernet Sauvignon adds structure and robust tannins, while the Merlot brings smoothness and roundness to the whole. This combination results in a wine of distinctive character, reflecting the uniqueness of the Contraviesa terroir, with its southern exposure facing the sea and its extreme elevation. The freshness is enhanced by the non-temperature controlled vinification process in a cool cellar, which preserves the integrity of the grapes' natural aromas and flavours.
