Buy Wine from Château Le Puy
If there is one thing the Amoreau family has been able to achieve, it is to preserve its traditions. That is why it has an unblemished reputation in the management of what is currently recognised as one of the best and longest-established wine producing wineries in France.
Château le Puy is a winery located in the southwest of France, specifically in Libourne, in the Bordeaux district. Since its foundation more than four centuries ago, this family of winegrowers has been expanding the cultivation lands, as well as improving the winemaking process. In this way, their taste is becoming more and more exquisite, but they are also much healthier.
"Original expression of terroir".
It is practically impossible, to refer to the Château le Puy winery and the Amoreau family, without mentioning their already popular slogan "Original expression of terroir", which reflects and gives a preview of what we will be able to enjoy in their wines.
It is very important for them that you can perceive in their wines the quality of the land where the grapes are grown, as well as the characteristics of the soil and the climate of the area, as well as the effort and passion they put into each bottle.
Biodynamic agriculture and ancestral methods
Although the winemaking methods implemented by the Château le Puy winery have certainly changed a little over the years, these changes have always been aimed at improving and creating better quality, healthier and more ecological wines.
That is why, for some time now, Pascal Amoreau and his father Jean-Pierre Amoreau have been following a philosophy of biodynamic agriculture by which they show respect for nature and their wines do not contain sulphites, nor are they clarified or filtered.
Furthermore, no sugars or yeasts are added during the fermentation process, which takes place naturally. In addition to all this, these winegrowers use a very precise lunar calendar for their biodynamic ageing.
From 1670 to the present day
The Le Puy estate was built in 1670. The rocky plateau of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, where the château was built at the beginning of the 17th century, is located on a hillside known as the "Slope of Wonders". Several battles took place in this area during the medieval period, which is why it is common to find sharp flints among the vines. In 1832, Barthélémy Amoreau made some extensions to the château.
The winemaking tradition has remained in the Amoreau family for almost 400 years, extending over 15 generations.
It was in 1990 that the winery decided to increase the ageing potential of its wines by avoiding adding sulphites, sugars and yeasts altogether.
By the year 2000, the Amoreau family also bought Château Pimpine, adding some 50 hectares where they cultivate the vineyards to produce their famous biodynamic and organic wines.
Château Le Puy wine making process
The 50 hectares of the vineyard were divided into three plots where different grape varieties are grown, such as the red grape Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and the white grape Sémillon. The soil is composed of limestone, as well as clay and silica.
Thebest grapes are selected and aged in oak barrels for almost two years, then the lees are moved according to the lunar calendar. This process is known as Batonnage.
The wines are not sulphited, no yeasts are added and they are not chaptalised. They are not clarified, nor are they filtered.
The result is simply formidable, because after all this process, and thanks to the influence of the soils, the climate, as well as the love and wisdom transferred from generation to generation, unique and incomparable wines of great quality and exquisite taste are obtained.
