Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 El Ciruelo could very well be the finest vintage of this single-vineyard bottling, from a plot on very poor soils that has very balanced vines that usually give the more complex and deeper wine from the winery. It's a north-facing plot at 480 to 520 meters in altitude pruned in the cordón trenzado system unique to La Orotava. It fermented with 100% full clusters, no temperature control, indigenous yeasts and a 27-day maceration time. It matured in used 500-liter oak barrels for 11 months. This is incredibly elegant, though the nose is still a bit shy; it might take some more time in bottle to show further complexity, but the texture is just incredible. It has the ashy/volcanic/pumice mouthfeel and very fine, slightly chalky tannins. This is up there with the 2016, perhaps a notch above. The nose is nuanced, insinuating and complex. Unfortunately this wine will have to change the name starting with the 2019 vintage because of a problem with the brand, and it will be called Las Suertes, the name of the paraje where the vineyard is. 4,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2019.

Description
From the slopes of the Valle de la Orotava, in Tenerife, comes Suertes del Marqués El Ciruelo, a wine made from Listán Negro and a small proportion of Listán Blanco, as a raw and pure expression of the volcanic soul of the Atlantic. Produced by Suertes del Marqués, this wine comes from a single plot of old vines cultivated in braided cordon, an ancestral system exclusive to the island. The plot faces north, between 480 and 520 metres above sea level, on extremely poor soils of ash, rock and pumice. There is no abundance here, but there is depth and character. The winery's philosophy is clear: minimum intervention, maximum expression of the place. The 2018 vintage, considered by many to be one of the best, was also the last under the name "El Ciruelo", forced to change for legal reasons from 2019.
Winemaking
The vinification of Suertes del Marqués El Ciruelo follows an austere and honest line. Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control and with whole bunches (100%), which provides structure and tension. Maceration was extended for 27 days, extracting complexity without overloading. The wine then spent 11 months in used 500-litre barrels, without interference from new wood, and was bottled unfiltered in November. Suertes del Marqués El Ciruelo is a wine that comes more from the soil than from the cellar.
Taste
Suertes del Marqués El Ciruelo is ethereal, mineral and elegant. On the nose, notes of black cherry, volcanic ash, dry leaf and graphite appear. On the palate, the texture is precise, with fine, slightly chalky tannins and a vertical acidity that cleanses and lengthens. There are traces of acid red fruit, plum skin, mountain herbs and a saline background. It is not an exuberant wine, but restrained, one of those that speak softly but say a lot. The persistence is long and mineral, with a smoky echo that recalls its origin. Ideal for those looking for depth, tension and authenticity in an Atlantic red wine.
