Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
In 2021, the Guiberteau family lost 40% of the crop of this cuvée due to frost. Evoking aromas of iris, peony, dark wild berries, spices and licorice, the 2021 Les Chapaulaises is medium-bodied, perfectly balanced, seamless and satiny with a fleshy core of fruit and a gentle austerity in the finish. Matured only in used barrels due to frost, this wine is approachable now but can evolve gracefully.

Description
Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Chapaudaises is an oenological gem from Domaine Guiberteau, a highly prestigious producer in the Saumur region of the Loire Valley. Made from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes, this wine comes from a 1.33 hectare plot located in the terroir of Bizay, in the commune of Épieds. This privileged location, close to the famous Brézé hill, is characterised by sandy-clay-loam soils on a bed of tuffeau, a soft limestone typical of the region, which brings freshness and minerality to the grapes. The vines, planted in 1948, are densely populated, with approximately 5,500 vines per hectare, which favours a controlled and concentrated yield.
Winemaking
As for the winemaking process, Guiberteau follows traditional and environmentally friendly methods. Harvesting is done by hand, with careful selection in the vineyard to ensure that only the best grapes reach the winery. The grapes are completely destemmed and fermented in cement vats with indigenous yeasts, allowing for a natural fermentation that respects the characteristics of the variety and the terroir. Maceration usually lasts about two weeks, during which time the tannins and aromatic compounds are delicately extracted. After fermentation, the wine is aged for ten months in truncated cone-shaped French oak barrels, without any chaptalisation or addition of sugar.
The ageing process culminates in a light filtration before bottling, ensuring that each bottle retains a refined and expressive structure without sacrificing the purity of the wine.
Taste
Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Chapaudaises offers a sensory profile that stands out for its complexity and balance. On tasting, it is medium to full-bodied, with a marked acidity that brings freshness and vivacity. On the nose, it displays aromas of flowers such as iris and peony, along with dark fruits such as wild berries, complemented by a touch of spice and a subtle hint of liquorice.
On the palate, the experience is enveloping: ripe fruit combines with notes of green pepper, coffee and wood, showing finely integrated tannins that provide an elegant and delicate structure. This wine is approachable to drink now, but thanks to its balance and tannic backbone, it has excellent cellaring potential, evolving in complexity and depth over time.
Guiberteau Saumur Rouge Les Chapaudaises is a unique expression of the region and of Domaine Guiberteau's commitment to quality and authenticity. It is ideal with red meats, game dishes and aged cheeses, and promises to be a memorable experience for wine lovers seeking a deep connection with the terroir and tradition of the Loire Valley.
