Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Les Arboises, produced from vines planted in 1957 within the Brézé commune on clay-limestone soils, present aromas of rose, dark wild berries, spices and a touch of oak. It’s medium-bodied, tense and straight with a juicy mid-palate and powdery tannins, concluding with a long, ethereal and fine-grained finish. The wine undergoes two weeks of maceration and is matured for two years in barrels, half of which are previously used and half are new.

Description
Guiberteau Saumur Les Arboises Rouge by Romain Guiberteau was born from an intimate look at the terroir and a firm desire to preserve the essentials. After leaving his career in law, Romain took over the family vineyard in the heart of the Loire, in Saint-Just-sur-Dive, inspired by the philosophy of the legendary Foucault de Clos Rougeard. From then on, respect for the soil and for the queen variety, Cabernet Franc, became his dogma. The "Les Arboises " plot, just over one hectare in size, was planted in 1957 on an Upper Turonian clay-limestone soil, typical of Brézé. The altitude, exposure and mineral structure of the soil give the wine a unique tension and depth. Since 2003, Guiberteau has been working in certified organic farming, and his minimalist approach in the cellar aims to reflect the identity of the site without any make-up.
Winemaking
The grapes are selectively harvested by hand. The grapes used to make Guiberteau Saumur Les Arboises Rouge, 100% Cabernet Franc, are destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete or wooden vats. Maceration is long but controlled, allowing fine tannins and structure to be extracted without over-extraction. The wine is aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, half of which are new, followed by refinement in tanks and in the bottle before release.
Taste
Serious and restrained, Guiberteau Saumur Les Arboises Rouge displays aromas of black fruits, violet and graphite, with a precise minerality reminiscent of wet chalk. The palate is tense, with vibrant acidity and refined, almost ethereal tannins. A linear and persistent wine, where the fruit intertwines with notes of earth, dried herbs and mild spices. It is austere, elegant and deeply linked to its origin. A red that does not seek to seduce with exuberance, but to convince with truth.
Guiberteau Saumur Les Arboises Rouge is a jewel of the Loire, ideal for those looking for elegant organic wines, with marked mineral expression and great ageing potential.
