Description

Since the Faiveley family acquired the Clos du Roy in 1971, this small, noble estate - once owned by the kings of France - has become one of Mercurey's most renowned sites. Nestled in the Côte Chalonnaise, its south-southwest exposure and compact, cool, white marl and clay-limestone soils offer the ideal conditions for producing a Pinot Noir of austere elegance and firm tannins, more reminiscent of a Côte de Nuits than of its more southerly origins. Planted in 1971 and 1982, the vineyard is worked organically, with a deep respect for the rhythm of the land. The philosophy of the Faiveley family has remained unchanged for seven generations: precision, patience and loyalty to the character of the land. It is not unusual for them to decide to harvest later than usual, even if they lose yields, in order to capture the purest expression of the Clos.

Winemaking

The vinification of Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Le Clos Du Roy aims to gently extract the essence of the grape. Pumping-over is carried out twice a day during fermentation, which lasts between 15 and 19 days. The wine is separated by gravity, and the press wine is obtained with very gentle pressure to preserve the finesse. The wine is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new oak, respecting the delicate profile of the wine.

Taste

Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Le Clos Du Roy offers an elegant nose of black and red fruits - cassis, cherry, ripe raspberry - intertwined with smoky notes, liquorice and subtle toast. On the palate, the tannins are fine but present, enveloping, with a satiny texture that caresses the palate. The fruit is precise and restrained, balanced by a lively acidity and an earthy background that adds depth. The finish is long, saline, with echoes of undergrowth, black tea and a chalky minerality that is the hallmark of its identity. A sober and refined Premier Cru, with a serene class that reveals its complexity with time and silence.

Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière

Since 1933, La Framboisière has been one of the most emblematic monopoles of Domaine Faiveley, located in the heart of Mercurey, in the Côte Chalonnaise. This 10.61 hectare plot, planted between 1949 and 2010, lies on east-facing clay-limestone soils, which bring freshness, tension and a marked minerality. Faiveley, one of Burgundy's most influential families, has cultivated this land for seven generations with a deep respect for the terroir, today opting for organic practices that preserve its natural balance.

The decision to vinify Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière as a single parcel was both strategic and sentimental. The name evokes the crisp raspberry aromas that emerge naturally in the wine year after year, and symbolises that Burgundian quest for pure identity: a wine that speaks unfiltered of its origin.

Winemaking

Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière is harvested by hand, selecting the Pinot Noir bunches with precision. Depending on the vintage, 25% of whole bunches are put into the vat, adding structure and freshness. Fermentation is carried out with daily pumping over for a controlled extraction of colour, tannin and aroma. After a maceration of 15 to 19 days, the wine is racked by gravity, and the skins are pressed slowly and carefully to preserve their purity. The wine is aged for 13 to 14 months in French oak barrels, with 20% new oak, seeking a balance between fruit and structure.

Taste

On the nose, Faiveley Mercurey La Framboisière displays a vibrant profile of raspberry, sour cherry, wild strawberry and subtle notes of damp earth, sweet spice and graphite. The palate is juicy, linear, with a lively acidity that adds tension and length. The fine, well-integrated tannins structure a finish marked by mineral notes, undergrowth and a delicate hint of chalk. This is a precise, characterful Mercurey, true to the spirit of Burgundy: elegant, austere and deeply rooted in its origins.
