Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
From a historic site in Troissy, planted with Pinot Meunier in the 1960s on land once cultivated for fruit trees, the NV Troissy La Croix Joly Réserve Perpétuelle has yet again delivered superb results. The fruit for this bottling comes from low-yielding, northeast-facing vines mid-slope, and gains its delicate pink hue via infusion, with the grapes macerating with their bunches in the press for a full day. Disgorged in October 2023 with just 1.1 grams per liter dosage, the wine conveys a palpable, almost chewy sucrosité from the fruit. It opens with a bouquet of red cherry, mandarin zest, wild raspberry, rose petals and Timut pepper, with subtle nuances of rye bread and rooibos. Medium- to full-bodied, with a concentrated core of fruit, it is supported by racy acidity and concludes with a long, sapid finish. As with Brisefer, the individual perpetual cuvée—initiated in 2013 and stored in wooden vats—is refreshed following each bottling with the most recent vintage (2019, for this particular release). The incoming 2019 wine, having already undergone eight months of élevage in small oak barrels, then spends an additional year harmonizing with the existing blend, which now incorporates vintages from 2013 through 2019, prior to bottling.

Description
Dehours La Croix Joly Réserve Perpétuelle Extra Brut is a unique expression of viticulture and oenology. Grown in the Lieu-dit La Croix Joly in Troissy, this wine comes from old Meunier vines planted on a gentle north-east facing slope. The soil, composed mainly of leached clay with little sandstone, together with very low yields, contribute to the exceptional quality of the grapes.
Winemaking
Making this wine is a real challenge, requiring a complete rethink of every aspect of the process, from plot selection and harvest date to vinification and ageing methods. Meunier, a variety that is completely at home in this region of Champagne, is used in an unusual way to produce a red wine (Pinot Noir being more common for this purpose). The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of the season and vinified by complete maceration of the grapes, fermented and aged in small oak barrels for 24 months, without filtration or fining.
Taste
Dehours La Croix Joly Réserve Perpétuelle Extra Brut is distinguished by its richness and complexity. It exhibits an aromatic explosion of ripe fruits such as yellow apple, yellow peach, mango, passion fruit and banana. This fruity profile is complemented by a subtle touch of oak, bringing balance and depth to the wine. It is recommended to be served in a red wine glass at a temperature above 12°C to fully appreciate its bouquet and palate. This wine is a true representation of terroir and winemaking skill, offering an unforgettable sensory experience for wine lovers.
