Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Disgorged in July 2019 with 5.5 grams per liter dosage, the NV Brut Grande Réserve is based on the 2016 vintage, complemented by around one-third reserve wines from a solera started in 1998. Much like a somewhat earlier disgorgement of the same tirage that I reviewed last year, it's showing very well, wafting from the glass with notes of pear, mandarin oil, elderflower, smoke and honeycomb. Medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and precise, with a perfumed core of fruit, lively acids and a pearly mousse, it's beautifully seamless and elegant.

Features

Description

Dehours Grande Réserve Brut champagne is an exquisite expression of tradition and innovation in viticulture. Produced by the prestigious Dehours winery, this wine reflects the rich heritage of the Marne Valley region of Champagne, France. The winery is dedicated to production methods that respect biodiversity, working the soil and allowing grass to grow between the vines. This sustainable approach is reflected in the quality and character of the wine.

Winemaking

Dehours Grande Réserve Brut is a cuvée that reveals the character of Pinot Meunier, the favourite grape variety in the Marne Valley and an icon of its vineyards. This wine is composed of 70% Meunier, complemented by 20% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir. The use of a high proportion of perpetual reserve initiated in 1998 adds complexity and depth to the wine's profile. Malolactic fermentation is completed to soften acidity and improve texture.
The wine is aged entirely on the lees and clarified by natural decanting, without filtration. This process gives the wine greater complexity and structure. The wine is bottled and then aged for 15 to 27 months in the bottle on the lees before disgorging. The date of bottling and disgorging is indicated on the back labels, and the base year of blending is the year before bottling. The dosage varies between 2.5g/l and 6g/l, depending on the disgorging.

Flavour

Dehours Grande Réserve Brut is juicy and fruity. Its taste profile is characterised by notes of red apple, pear, lemon zest and fresh bread. The dominant presence of Meunier adds an interesting quality to the wine, offering a taste experience reminiscent of a cremant. The bubbles are soft, and the wine has a smooth lactic texture on the palate. The finish is lithe, but a delicate florality is perceptible towards the end.
