Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

There is an extra degree of elegance in the 2022 El Tiznado. This single-vineyard red was produced with fruit from vines planted in 1923 in a plot called El Hoyo in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra on red limestone soils at 500 meters in altitude. The destemmed grapes fermented in small oak vats and aged in 500-liter French oak barrels for 16 months. He used 225-liter barrels before, and it feels like the move to 500-liter barrels has given the wine better balance and more integrated oak. It's powerful, elegant, serious and a little closed and undeveloped, with good ripeness, 14% alcohol, good development of aromas and flavors and very fine tannins. This should age effortlessly. 1,439 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2024.

Description

From its first lines, Cuentaviñas El Tiznado is the intimate story of a passionate bond with the land. When Eduardo Eguren, fifth generation of a family saga dedicated to wine, received three inherited vineyards after the death of his grandfather, he understood that these were not just plots of land, but an emotional legacy that he aspired to honour with authenticity and risk. Thus was born his personal project in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in the heart of La Rioja Alta, in the area of Peciña, where wine-growing tradition is intertwined with a modern and uncompromising sensibility.

El Tiznado comes from the El Hoyo plot, planted in 1923 and oriented to the Southwest, on sandy soils of calcareous decomposition with a high presence of ferric oxides, which give it its characteristic reddish tone. From this poor, ancient soil, vines of Tempranillo emerge in goblet-trained vines, with slow ripening and contained yields, under a temperate continental climate with a clear Atlantic influence. At an altitude of 500 metres, this location gives the wine a vibrant tension and an incisive minerality, the unmistakable hallmark of its origin.

Winemaking

Cuentaviñas El Tiznado is harvested by hand in small boxes, with double selection in the winery. Fermentation is spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts, in large 3,000-litre French oak vats. Extraction is carried out by gentle manual punching down, respecting the finesse of the fruit. After a maceration of about 20 days, malolactic fermentation takes place in 228-litre French oak barrels, where the wine then ages for 18 months. The final resting in the bottle takes place in an 18th century cave, at a constant temperature, which refines its unhurried expression.

Taste

On the nose, Cuentaviñas El Tiznado reveals an elegant and restrained profile: black fruits (plum, blackberry), subtle floral notes and an almost earthy mineral background. There are also hints of mild spices, cocoa and a slight note of undergrowth, such as lavender or sage. On the palate, the entry is structured, with firm but polished tannins, an enveloping texture and precise acidity. The development is tense, deep and sober, with ripe black fruit that does not overwhelm, but rather sustains. The finish is long, dry, saline, with an almost stony sensation, reflecting its origin. A serious, age-worthy wine that speaks softly but leaves its mark.
