Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
One of the few 2024s in bottle was the 2024 Cíes, a village Albariño from different soils and expositions fermented in neutral barrels of different sizes, where it matured for eight months. The year is characterized by good ripeness; this has 13.3% alcohol and notable balancing acidity and freshness. It's clean, expressive and serious, with a salty twist and a faint bitter twist in the finish. 15,000 bottles produced.

Description
Rodri Méndez has always had that rare blend of stubbornness and sensitivity that only appears in winemakers who have grown up looking at the sea. In the Val do Salnés (D.O. Rías Baixas ), where the mist comes in punctually from the estuary and the granite peeps out from under the sand like a backbone, his idea with Cíes Blanco was not to "make another Albariño", but to recover an older and more honest way of understanding it: less easy perfume, more landscape. Cíes Blanco was born almost as a serious prank, from old vines on granite and sandy soils, seeking the Atlantic tension without concessions. In an area where many pursue aromatic exuberance, Rodri made a brave decision: to allow the wine to "speak softly", even accepting that initial severity that can only be refined with air and time. There is no blending or make-up here: 100%Albariño.
Winemaking
The grapes come in with a clear obsession: to preserve energy and precision. It is worked with delicate pressing and a vinification that is not intended to dominate, but to accompany. Part of the character of Cíes Blanco lies in its ageing: it is divided between stainless steel and foudres, with fermentation in neutral containers that provide texture without aromatisation. The wine matures for around 8 months, refining volume and depth, but without losing its edge. A technical key is the renunciation of malolactic fermentation, in order to maintain the backbone of freshness and nerve that defines its style. It is bottled when it no longer screams youth, but neither has it been tamed: a straight, gastronomic, characterful Atlantic white wine.
Taste
On the nose, Cíes Blanco does not seek immediate applause: first there is a clear minerality, of wet stone and saline breeze, and then layers of citrus - lime, grapefruit - open up with restrained white fruit, more peach than tropicality. The palate is vertical and precise: medium to full, with taut acidity that stretches the wine like a rope and a worked texture that gives it body without weight. The finish is long, clean, with salinity and a fine, almost citrus-peel bitterness that leaves the palate sharp and calling for seafood, fish or Atlantic rice dishes.
