Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The dark, intensely colored 2019 Sancerre En Grands Champs Rouge opens quite oxidative on the nose, revealing iodine and finely oxidative notes with potted plummy aromas. Rich but refined and perfectly balanced, this is a full-bodied, refreshing, mineral and refined Sancerre Pinot with serious substance and plummy Port aromas. The tannins are fine and fresh, and the salinity gives even more pleasure. 13% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted in January 2022.

Description
Alphonse Mellot En Grands Champs is a sublime expression of French viticulture, specifically from the Sancerre region. This wine, made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, comes from a parcel of 62 year old vines, which brings a unique complexity and depth to its character. Production is limited to approximately 3,000 bottles, which underlines its exclusivity and care in winemaking.
Winemaking
The winemaking of Alphonse Mellot En Grands Champs is meticulous and detailed. The grapes are harvested in small 25 kg crates to ensure the integrity of the fruit. Once in the cellar, the bunches are carefully selected and transported to the fermentation vats. Cold maceration lasts between 8 and 12 days, followed by fermentation at temperatures not exceeding 28°C, thus preserving the delicate aromas of the Pinot Noir. The total duration of maceration is approximately 4 weeks.
Ageing takes place in new barrels for 14 months, which contributes to the structure and complexity of the wine. This barrel ageing process allows the wine to develop a harmony between the fruit flavours and the nuances provided by the wood.
Taste
Alphonse Mellot En Grands Champs has a deep carmine colour and a complex bouquet with notes of cherry and pink pepper. The tannins are silky and promise great cellaring potential, suggesting that this wine will evolve beautifully over time. The influence of the terroir is clearly evident, with a distinctive character given by the limestone soils of Buzançais and the Kimmeridgiense base.
This wine is ideal with dishes such as poultry liver terrine with onion confit, veal heart with marrow, or a vineyard peach soup with star anise.
