Description
In the heart of Avize, Étienne Calsac represents a new generation of vignerons with the soul of a taste archaeologist. Étienne Calsac Comète Nº4 was born from an act of resistance: to rescue the Petit Meslier, a variety practically forgotten in Champagne, difficult to grow, capricious, but capable of offering a unique expression of freshness and precision. For Calsac, this cuvée is not an experiment, but a statement. Working "lieux-dits" plots with chalky soils and a continental climate, he favours minimal intervention viticulture, seeking wines that speak more of the soil than of man. In a particularly demanding vintage, Étienne chose not to bottle part of the wine, putting purity and tension before performance: a gesture that defines his commitment to the essential.
Winemaking
Étienne Calsac Comète Nº4 begins its journey with the manual harvesting of the Petit Meslier, carefully picked in small crates to preserve the integrity of the fruit until it reaches the cellar. Vinification is precise: fermentation in stainless steel to preserve the varietal clarity, without oak, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle using the traditional method. Ageing on the lees lasts 36 months, providing depth without losing vivacity. As an Extra Brut, the dosage is minimal (6 g/l), just enough to bring out the wine's natural tension. Bottled as a limited edition, Étienne Calsac Comète Nº4 is a Blanc de Blancs in the purest sense: singular, direct, uncompromising.
Taste
The first contact with Étienne Calsac Comète Nº4 is vibrant: aromas of lime, cider and green apple, with a delicate floral profile - acacia blossom, lemon peel. Subtle notes of brioche, raw almond and wet chalk appear, all wrapped in a straight minerality. On the palate, the texture is elegant, with very fine bubbles and an electric acidity that marks the passage. There is tension, austerity, but also juicy energy. Hints of sour pear, fresh ginger and a very marked saline note lift the long, precise finish. Étienne Calsac Comète Nº4 is not a Champagne of concessions: it is for those who seek the essential, the lively, that which speaks of the soil rather than the hand. A wine-idea, a rarity for lovers of mineral purity.
