San Román Cartago Paraje del Pozo 2020

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The dark, almost opaque red 2020 Cartago Paraje del Pozo, pure Tinta de Toro from ancient engrafted vines, is quite a bruiser, with 15% alcohol and packing abundant tannins, but the tannins are very fine and make it finer-boned than what I expected from the color and nose. It's very smoky, with toasty notes and a hint of fountain pen ink and graphite—think black. I'd still wait to pull the cork; it's going to take bottle aging to tame those tannins. The élevage was long, 31 months in new and used French oak barrels. 3,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023. This is one for the long haul.

Description
There are wines that tell stories. That transport you. Cartago Paraje del Pozo is one of them. It is born in a privileged corner of Toro, in a small crag at an altitude of more than 700 metres above sea level, where centuries-old vines defy time. This jewel is the work of San Román Bodegas y Viñedos, a project that breathes passion and respect for the land.
Made mostly from Tinta de Toro, with a small contribution of other indigenous varieties, San Román Cartago Paraje del Pozo reflects the essence of its surroundings. The soil is sandy with clay at depth, a soil that, although poor in nutrients, forces the vines to work hard, concentrating their energy in small but intensely expressive clusters.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, cluster by cluster, with an exacting selection process. After a complete destemming, fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, allowing the wine to express its true character. It then spends 30 months in new and used French oak barrels, refining over time until it finds its perfect balance.
Taste
When you pour a glass of Cartago Paraje del Pozo, the first thing you notice is its intensity. Aromas of black fruits, juicy blackberries, ripe plums, with an undertone of spices and cocoa. The palate is a different story. Powerful, but without losing elegance. Its tannins are firm, but envelop the palate with an unexpected softness. The minerality is present, reminding you of where it comes from. And the finish... long, enveloping, one of those that leave you thinking.
San Román Cartago Paraje del Pozo is a wine that doesn't just seek to impress, but to excite. It is not to be drunk in a hurry, but calmly, enjoying every sip, every nuance. A tribute to the land of Toro and to the art of making wine with soul.
