Description
In the heart of Cambria, a stone's throw from the Pacific, Rajat Parr found more than a vineyard: he found an almost monastic vocation. After years in the temples of wine - as an elite sommelier in top US restaurants - Rajat abandoned the noise of opulent wine lists to immerse himself in a radical viticulture of deep listening and minimal intervention. At Phelan Farm, he doesn't impose styles; he lets the landscape speak.
It all started with an intuition: that this corner of the San Luis Obispo Coast, buffeted by salt spray and cold nights, had something to say with its own voice. Soils of limestone and marine clays, barely 3 miles from the sea, where roots must fight for their space. The constant wind and coastal fog moderate the extreme temperatures, giving long ripening cycles. In this cold maritime climate, Pinot Noir expresses itself with a purity that is difficult to match.
Here, Rajat decided to plant unconventional clones, some originating from old Burgundy vineyards and others obtained through mass selections that he himself rescued on his travels. And as if he were a Zen gardener, he works each plot under biodynamic and regenerative practices, without machinery, without chemicals, letting time and biodiversity set the pace.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand at the right point of freshness, with whole bunches of grapes arriving at the winery in small boxes. There is no systematic destemming; it depends on the character of the year and the plot. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, in small open vats, without temperature control, with gentle hand treading to extract only what is necessary. Nothing is forced, nothing is corrected.
Phelan Farm Pinot Noir then rests in neutral French oak barrels, without racking or sulphur additions in most cases. Ageing lasts between 9 and 12 months, seeking harmony, not make-up. It is bottled without fining or filtering. Each vintage is a testimony of the vineyard and the year, without artifice, like a logbook written in the language of the soil.
Taste
Phelan Farm Pinot Noir is raw elegance, without cosmetics. Aromas of wild cherry, dried rose and fresh raspberry emerge with a patina of undergrowth and a saline whisper that recalls its proximity to the ocean. There is no lush fruit; there is tension, precision, a mineral murmur that envelops every note.
The palate is fine and vibrant, with tannins like granite dust, almost imperceptible but firm. An electric acidity underpins the centre, driving the wine forward with a nervous rhythm, like an undercurrent. There is a hint of orange peel, hibiscus and black tea, with a long, ethereal finish where the chalky profile of the terroir comes through.
Phelan Farm Pinot Noir does not seek to impress with volume, but with truth. It is a wine of open landscapes, of courageous decisions, of deep listening. A wine that does not impose itself, but once it is opened, it is never forgotten.
