Description
Between the Pacific mist and the steep slopes of Cambria, on the coast of San Luis Obispo (California), a winemaking project was born that defies convention as naturally as the sea breathes: Phelan Farm. At the helm, Raj Parr, a young winemaker with the soul of a poetic rebel, left behind the established formulas of Californian oenology to devote himself to a regenerative, almost spiritual viticulture, guided by the rhythms of the moon, the balance of the living soil and a fierce curiosity. His big bet: to vinify in an absolutely free way, without additives, without make-up, listening to the vineyard and the environment as if they were oracles.
Phelan Farm Chardonnay Rosé is the result of one of those decisions that only those who are not afraid of risk or ambiguous beauty make. The grapes, pink-skinnedChardonnay - a genetic rarity that mutated naturally in the old vines - are hand-harvested in small plots surrounded by pine trees, where the granitic, sandy soil is more reminiscent of Alsace or the Jura than the usual warm California profile. The cool, misty, oceanic climate slows ripening and tightens the acidity, bringing a raw, wild energy to the wine. There is no appellation that can contain this expression: it is pure coastal freedom in liquid form.
Winemaking
Each cluster enters the winery with the delicacy with which a sacred fruit is touched. The grapes are pressed directly, without destemming, allowing the must to take on just a hint of the colour of those unusual pink skins. Fermentation starts spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks and without temperature control, allowing the wine to follow its natural path. There is no fining, no filtration, no sulphur added. Phelan Farm Chardonnay Rosé rests for 9 months on its fine lees, in 500-litre neutral toasted oak barrels, acquiring an ethereal, almost floating texture, while oxygen patiently carves its final shape.
Taste
The first olfactory contact is pure sensory provocation: notes of white grapefruit, peach skin and dried wild rose petals emerge with hypnotic fragility, followed by a sharp salinity that evokes the foam of the sea on hot rock. There is something slightly umami, like jasmine tea or aged kombucha, that makes it deeply intriguing. On the palate, it comes in like a cold wave: sharp, saline, crisp, with that vibrant tension reminiscent of the feel of a stone freshly wet by the tide. As it opens, Phelan Farm Chardonnay Rosé unfurls subtle layers of white nectarine, yuzu zest and a hint of rhubarb, all wrapped in a ghostly, light, electric structure. The finish is long, dry and mineral, like a farewell that leaves its mark on the palate and in the memory.
